All Movie Guide - Jeremy Wheeler
The curtain rises on Marvel Comics' first in-house production to rousing results as their metal man of iron introduces himself to enthralled moviegoers everywhere. Just as billionaire playboy Tony Stark utilizes his technological know-how to fight evildoers, so does director Jon Favreau use his bag of cinematic tricks to lay the groundwork for yet another top-caliber franchise starring one of the biggest icons of the printed page. Delivering laughs as well as leaps of wonder, this comic-book fantasy gets it right across the board, with its buoyant tone never diluting the grounded dramatics of the story. For the flick to work, though, one needs an exceptional cast -- something this production has in spades. Sure, it's an origin story, but to the cast's credit, none of it ever seems tedious. Even if they basically follow the same superhero mold of yesteryear, the tight ensemble of Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard, and Jeff Bridges sells the action romp every step of the way -- so much so that one can't help but want more. It's quite evident that the best is yet to come, not only with this series, but also with big-screen Marvel outings as a whole. With clever shout-outs to the imprint's expansive universe including a post-credit cameo that'll send the geek Richter scale off the charts, Iron Man sets the stage for as yet unrealized crossover possibilities, a dream barely hinted at in previous book-to-screen adaptations. If future productions can deliver on the story while juggling both the technology and the talent as well as this one did, then it is possible that this is the true start of comicdom's cinematic rebirth, built by the best that Hollywood has to offer. All in all, a fine introduction to a hero that finally dares to tackle weight-of-the-world issues. It's about time.

Downey Jr. kept this movie together

This film got so much more hype and attention than "The Incredible Hulk," but most of it was undeserved. This was a great movie, and a wonderful example of the comic book-to-film craze. However, other than Downey Jr. the performances were dull and unbelievable. Obidiah was the worst excuse for a villain I've ever seen. He wasn't intimidating, frightening, or intelligent. Pepper Potts was whinny, weak, and a complete waste of a woman. The characterization was terrible compared to "Hulk," where the performances were beautiful all around. Downey Jr. was the perfect Tony Stark, however, and he single handedly made the entire movie enjoyable.

Iron Man - Awesome, different and Downey Jr.

The first movie that I noticed Robert Downey Jr. in was Gothika. Then afterwards Iron Man looked pretty good. I'm not like a big comic fan but still thought the movie was pretty good. Its about a guy, gets kidnapped, thanks to his experience while being captive builds a suit thing and tries to help the world or something. I know I know, not the best summary for a comic that a lot of people like so sorry about that. Anyway, the plot was really good as well as the performances and not only Robert did a good job. Jeff Bridges was also good and you couldn't even recognize the guy. Last movie I saw of his was the Vanishing. Terrance Howard was pretty good including Gwyneth. There's something about Robert that you just like about him. You could say I'm starting to watch more of his movies (just watched U.S. Marshalls and he was also good in that). In the film, there are some funny moments and good dialogue. The suspense was especially good and that ending. So if you haven't seen Iron Man go for it. You can see it even if you haven't read the comics (no offense to all you comic lovers out there).

    Iron Man the beginning

Like most super hero movies, this one had to spend a lot of time on the origin of Iron Man. It was done very well, but the next movie can now start with an action movie right from the opening credits. I think for this reason Spiderman 2,and Batman the Dark Night were better than the first. So I'm hoping for a really good Iron Man 2.

    Very Entertaining

Very entertaining movie. At first I couldn't see Robert Downey playing the roll of Ironman, but I was wrong. He was excellent. He is a very talented actor. Can't wait for the second movie.

    Awesome!

I must say that this movie was one of the best movies of 2008. It has non-stop action and a great sense of humor. It is very entertaining and it will leave you at the edge of your seat the whole time! And they could not have chose a better actor than Robert Downey Jr. to play Tony Stark. He is incredible! Take my advice and I'm positive that you'll enjoy this movie.

The Performances Stand On Their Own

Unlike your typical super-hero action films, Ironman stnads on its own due to the performances of the actors. Sure, you'll be swept away by the special effects and the action, but its the performances make you really care about watching the story unfold. Robert Downy Jr. brings a presence of actual believeability to this fictional character. The supporting cast is also outstanding. Adults and children will both enjoy this cinematic effort.

The most enjoyable superhero film of 2008

"The Dark Knight" may have been the best superhero film of 2008, and Heath Ledger certainly deserves all the posthumous accolades being thrown his way, but "Iron Man" beats it hands-down for sheer entertainment value.

Like "Dark Knight," "Iron Man" is successful because of the strength of its cast and their performances. Robert Downey Jr. brings wit, energy, presence, and great humanity to his portrayal of billionaire industrialist Tony Stark. Downey gets to play off Jeff Bridges, Gwenyth Paltrow and Terrance Howard, and at least two of them don't disappoint. While the special effects are fun to watch and marvel at, it's the story and the characters that make "Iron Man" worth repeat viewings. Jon Favreau, previously known for indie comedies like "Swingers" and family films like "Elf" and "Zathura" really hits one out of the park by keeping the fantasy grounded in these real characters and the real-world issues that drive them. Yet there's also a sense of fun -- largely propelled by Downey's performance and his chemistry with Paltrow, who plays Stark's assistant Pepper Potts -- like the cast and crew remembered that movies are supposed to entertain you, not just emotionally overwhelm you.

The two-disc version of "Iron Man" is definitely worth a look; there's a making-of documentary that's almost as long as the film itself, a brief history of the comic, and Downey's test reel, where he shows off his talent for improvisation that makes his performance so much fun to watch here.

    Completely awesome!

Better than all 3 Spider-man movies combined. Robert Downey Jr. plays the perfect Tony Stark.

    Absolutely stunning!

The film itself was great, couldn't have been better, but the thing I was most impressed with was Robert Downey Jr. in the title role. I've been a fan of his for years, but I seriously think Tony Stark was his best performance thus far. Likewise, there couldn't be a better actor to play Tony Stark with his sarcasm, dry humor, and laid-back attitude even at the worst of times. Downey's performance alone makes this film worth watching even if you don't enjoy &quot Super Hero&quot movies. And he's gorgeous, which doesn't hurt a bit!

SLOW TO GET INTO (FIRST THIRD) BUT WELL WORTH THE TIME TO DEVELOP!!! I MISSED THE THEATER- BUT DON'T MISS THE VIDEO!!!!

One thing I loved about Marvel Comics back in the 60's was they set the scene's in actual earth locations (not like Megatropolis), and they did it again by using Afganahstan as part of location!
Tony Stark (Downey Jr) is the heart of this video. His image was perfect and his acting was spot on!!!
Virginia "Pepper" Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) was the typical submissive personal secretary and a beautiful redheaded woman that captured my attention every frame.
Jeff Bridges as Obadiah Stane caught me off guard, but the typical character of partner's evil side was TOO SIMPLE (oh well).
Yes the last line is THE PUNCH!!!

The last line made the movie.

I really enjoyed this movie, but was somewhat disturbed by a gratuitous sex scene in the beginning. The plot and pace of the movie were fine; Robert Downey Jr. did a wonderful job with the character. I thoroughly enjoyed the ending; the last line made the movie
