Growing up, all three guitarists realized their rebellion through music: Page was attempting to subvert the sugary-sweet pop music of the 1960s, the Edge was hell-bent on making the guitar solos of the 1970s a distant memory, and White used his screeching strings to buzz out the droning bass machines of the 1980s. Later, Page makes his way to Headley Grange to revisit the birthplace of "Stairway to Heaven," The Edge digs out the original four-track rehearsals for "Where the Streets Have No Name" in Dublin, and White expresses his exuberance for revered bluesman Son House -- all the while displaying their deep love for their instrument of choice by permitting the viewer a rare chance to see them refining as-yet-unreleased material. When the trio comes together for a landmark jam session, their spectacularly diverse styles and instruments become just as apparent as the shared passion that binds them all together.

It Might Get Loud is a slick documentary about three seminal guitarists from successive generations of rock royalty: Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page, U2's the Edge, and the White Stripes/Raconteurs/Dead Weather's Jack White. The film follows the guitarists individually, in evocative settings like Headley Grange, the studio where "Stairway to Heaven" was written, and the Dublin high school where U2 first played together as teenagers. The three subjects sidestep music-biz gossip and open up about their influences, their approach to songcraft, and their aesthetic goals. Music lovers -- guitar fanatics in particular -- will thrill to some behind-the-scenes tech-talk as the artists explain how they get their respective sounds. These fascinating individual interviews are intercut with impressionistic bits, animation, cool titles, mesmerizing vintage footage of the guitarists and their blues singer heroes, and a round-robin jam featuring all three guitarists learning and playing each other's tunes. The live music segments are at times awkward, as the men eye each other warily and shyly, seemingly unsure of how to interact. But when the music works -- as it does in the trio's impromptu "Whole Lotta Love" -- sparks fly and genuine smiles break out all over. Fortunately, these inspired moments outshine the clumsy on-stage socializing, and viewers are left with the impression that these three very different masters have more in common than previously suspected.

    One Great film!

    I loved this film. Saw it three times in the theatres.
    This film made me appreciate music in a new way.
    The look on Jack White's and The Edge's faces when Jimmy starts playing is worth way more than the price of the dvd.
    This isn't a concert dvd by any means-but not a "behind the music" either.
    Its simply three great guitar players getting together to "have a chat" as Jimmy says "and the instruments will be there, too. . So, who knows"

    It's really fun to see them play together. I'm going to get this for several friends and family. With three generations-Jimmy, Jack and the Edge, everyone can relate.

    Three very different perspectives. . .
    One great film.

    Young@Heart

    Total feel-good for all ages, with an Edge.

    This is the first time I've taken the time to write any kind of online review, but I wanted to make sure to weigh in on this one. If you like music, documentaries or just a couple hours of feel-good cinema, do yourself a favor and rent or buy this movie! I don't know why they're not releasing this on DVD until 12/22 because even a week earlier and I'd give it as a Christmas gift. To everyone from a 17 year-old British friend to my 69 year-old Midwestern never-listened-to-any-of-this-music-in-his-life dad. It's engaging, fun, uplifting, informative, funny, emotional and incredibly well-put-together.

    Excellent Film!

    I thoroughly enjoyed this film. I learned some thing about Edge and Jimmy Page, and the Edge learned some things about Jimmy Page. I know nothing about Jack White, but that didn't hinder things at all. Seeing Jimmy and Edge jam "I Will Follow" was outstanding! I found Edge to be a real engaging person. Seems like he's a nice guy. If you like any of these three artists, you will enjoy learning about the others.

    This is one for your collection of classics... gorgeously done!

    This is one of those pieces you go ahead and get the Blue Ray for. Don't rent this one, BUY IT! I don't even bother putting it away anymore, my son and his friends keep putting it on. I originally saw this on a plane, and couldn't wait to watch it again without people's airplane-heads in the foreground. This wonderful film says it all to young aspiring musicians, and reminds the adults what music can inspire. I can't say who enjoys it more, so, great for all ages. The setting is based on a first time meeting amongst a musical icon and two younger geniuses, one of whom walks the line between fitting right in and trying to hide his awe of the others... very endearing. The film takes you through each one's past, and how their respective roads brought them to where they are now. The moments are priceless, watching each one play us what inspired and molded their musical characters. How can you adequately express how one feels watching their son's face when The Edge walks down the halls of his and Bono's childhood school recalling the post that asked for anyone interested in forming a band, and The Edge tells us, "Always look for signs that will take you in an unexpected direction." Aside from the emotional journey we're taken on, these three educate us with such delight and expression on the histories of their musical styles. Do get the Blue Ray if you can swing it, the sound and screen is ideal for this.

    A Refreshing Escape from the VH1's "Behind the Music" Style Rockumentary

    I was totally surprised to love this movie. I love music, don't get me wrong, but I'm not the avid type of fan that seeks out every guitar oriented movie featuring rock legends. So I was worried that this film would skew too far toward that specific demographic. I was so pleased to have had that idea all wrong.

    Guggenheim (together with spot-on editing) focuses on three musicians who, on paper, seem to have nothing in common, and manages to weave their stories and artistic journeys together in a thoughtful, provocative way.

    Plus no girlfriends, ex-band members, managers or music industry moguls talking about what makes these guys special, or how their drug problem really messed up the band, etc. So refreshing!

    Highlights include sprinklings of poignant, funny moments that humanize these "legends" and make them relatable, especially Jimmy Page playing air guitar to his personal record collection.

    I have seen this documentary only once... And I remember facts about all of the artists still! The mark of a great documentary is what it reveals about the subject/s. I love to listen to artists for clues about the nucleus that drives the creativity and beyond that to actually birth the idea! Fascinating! Each artist in this film shows why they are on the cutting edge of their craft! My son is a gifted guitar player/musician and I like to share this type of inspiration with him.

    LOVE IT

    This is so different from anything ever made. If you are a fan of Led Zeppelin, U2 or any of Jack White's projects you will enjoy this. A real treat!

    Fabulous!

    I have been a Jimmy Page fan since I saw him with The Yardbirds in Minneapolis in the mid-sixties. He has always been a consumate guitarist, with his own style, and it shows on this DVD. He helped produce this, but it's not all him. I was introduced to Jack Black, an exceptional guitarist and songwriter, and got to know a lot more about Edge that I never knew. Very informative about their respective pasts and how they were inspired to create their sound by various artists. And the jam together was fantastic! I have watched and listened to this at least a dozen times in the last two weeks, and learn and hear something new every time. Definitely a must-have in any collection!

    Great background stories!

    When will you ever see Jimmy Page, Edge, and Jack White in one room? They shared great stories about how they each started in the business. Jimmy Page is such a legend and this DVD is worth getting just to see him! Rich in background stories and history and wonderful to hear them play...........

    Christmas gift for husband

    We bought this dvd It Might Get Loud for my husband for Christmas he is learning to play guitar, but is an avid fan of documentaries like this. He really enjoyed it and so did I
