Jack and the Beanstalk: The Real Story

( 5 )

Overview

After watching the two making-of segments on the DVD, it seems everyone who had anything to do with the making of Jack and the Beanstalk: The Real Story had a great time doing it, loved working with director Brian Henson, and loved every minute of it. What do you expect them to say? The guy paid their salaries, of course they're going to love him. There are a few true behind-the-scenes shots of on-set activity that reveal how many of the special effects were rendered, but most of it is clips from the film ...

What do you expect them to say? The guy paid their salaries, of course they're going to love him. There are a few true behind-the-scenes shots of on-set activity that reveal how many of the special effects were rendered, but most of it is clips from the film punctuated with video interviews. The disc's images look crisp and clear, as you would expect in a digitized format. The Dolby 2.0 sound, the original format for the film's TV presentation, is the default setting on the disc; be sure to go to the Audio Special Features and opt for the Dolby 5.1 to get the full benefit of the Surround sound.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
What if the Jack and the beanstalk saga were true? It's a fascinating starting point for a special effects fantasy, but at 184 minutes, and even with top-notch effects shots every few seconds, there's a lot of padding in the story. The first half sets up the story well enough, introducing Jack and his ancestors before flashing back to young Jack's familiar "fee-fi-fo-fum" fairytale and showing the menacing giant (played by co-writer Bill Baretta). There's a nifty twist in the second half (the giant gets his side of the story told), but an elaborate trial sequence involving a tribunal of costumed giants (including Daryl Hannah in a frightening ice queen frock) in front of thousands of computer animated spectators bogs things down a mite, not to mention a momentum-diverting subplot involving the cloning of the goose that lays golden eggs (it is an interesting idea, however).

    This movie is great.

I am so happy to find this available. I have looked at all our video stores for it and now I can buy it for our own family collection. We rented it once and watched it over and over. Nice twist to an old story.

    Terrific!!!

My son and I watched this movie and were hooked. My son, who was 3 at the time, made me play it for him over and over. It's a new spin on an old fairy tale.

    A great family night movie

This movie is one of the few movies my family and I truly enjoy watching together. We were all so involve in the movie that we did not realized that three hours went by. Unexpected surprises kept coming up in the movie so it kept all of us wide awake the whole time. This movie will be part of my collection of the greatest movies I ever watched.
