An itinerant ex-military investigator is tasked with solving a shooting spree that isn't quite as cut-and-dry as it first seems as author Lee Child's 2005 novel One Shot comes to the big screen courtesy of writer/director Christopher McQuarrie. When a crazed sniper guns down five seemingly random people on a crowded Pittsburgh riverfront, Det. Emerson (David Oyelowo) quickly amasses enough evidence at the scene to implicate an unstable ex-military sniper named James Barr (Joseph Sikora). Upon being questioned by Emerson and DA Alex Rodin (Richard Jenkins), however, Barr demands to speak with Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise). A former military investigator who fell off the grid following his service, Reacher soon shows up on the scene and begins gathering clues with the aid of talented defense attorney Helen Rodin (Rosamund Pike), the daughter of the DA. Meanwhile, when Reacher is assaulted in a local bar, he correctly surmises that someone is determined to impede his investigation. His theory plays out when he becomes the prime suspect in the murder of a young woman shortly thereafter. Now, with the police closing in from one side and a gang of ruthless killers gaining ground on the other, Reacher must use his formidable detective skills in order to catch the gunman and uncover his true motives.

I have read almost every Jack Reacher novel written by Lee Child and have enjoyed every one. The screenplay was not the best adaptation; and, perhaps the most offensive part was the casting of Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. Part of Jack Reacher's appeal is that he is a larger-than-life self-contained aggressive survival machine, and Tom Cruise is none of the foregoing. I'm sorry, the poor casting and screenplay ruined it for me.
It was a great movie. My husband I thoroughly enjoyed it. It doesn't matter that Cruise wasn't as tall as the character was written. Would you be happy if it was Arnold Schwarnegger playing the role? Sly Stallone? The acting was good. The screenplay was good. It did what movies are supposed to do: entertain. Very few enjoyable movies have gone in the past year. I'd rather have a good actor than one who looked right but couldn't act.
This is a good action movie, but is missing the edginess of the character in the book. I had a Jack Reacher in my mind and now all I can see is Tom Cruise. A few more books, maybe that image will go away. Reacher is not handsome, he's physically imposing, and has few social skills. The scene with the teenage girl in the bar just did not work, Cruise was too ... well, Cruise. Reacher is belligerent, Cruise was this wierd combination of sarcasm and simpering. I wanted to like it -- I bought it, so I was definitely hopeful. It's not a bad movie, the action scenes deliver, but it's a Cruise movie, not a Reacher movie. If you can go with that, you'll be happy.
I am a serious Lee Child fan and have read half of the Reacher novels and am still working my way through the rest. I was thrilled to hear that they were bringing Reacher to the big screen and astonished by the idiotic choice of casting Tom Cruise in the role. Don't get me wrong. I like Tom as an actor and knew he was good at pulling off the action stuff, but Reacher's physical size is a core element of who he is. Let's face it, Tom Cruise isn't anywhere close to being physically imposing. However, being the fan of Jack Reacher that I am, I opted to see the film despite my serious misgivings about Mr. Cruise playing the role. Here's what I took away from it. My husband, who has never read any of the books and thus knows nothing about the character, liked the movie quite a bit. I enjoyed it as well, mainly because I worked to detach myself from the title and the books. If I pretended it wasn't "the" Jack Reacher, it was a very enjoyable action flick. For that reason, I give it four stars. Just don't try to take it too seriously, and you should enjoy it assuming you're a fan of over-the-top action.
My son and I really enjoyed this movie. It was action-packed, well-acted and had a very good storyline. Cruise's character almost reminded me of a modern day Sherlock Holmes. I appreciate movies with an interesting plot and a good twist. Definitely recommend!
This was actually pretty good. As a movie at least. Suspense in some moments. Story's also interesting. Might read the book series.
enough said already about this one.
Jaws remake with a small Tiger Shark or Moby Dick with a small black whale -- Jack Reacher as a small white guy: what a concept. Why buy the book, just make a movie. Jack Reacher fans have to say I DON'T THINK SO!
Why oh why did they cast Tom Cruise? Did scientology buy him this part? He is NOT Reacher - read the books - they are great!
It was an excellent movie, even if he lacked the physical characteristics of Jack Reacher. It was well made and well acted. Watch the movie before posting a poor review.
Once I got past the fact Tom Cruise wasn't 6'5", 250lbs and blonde!! it was good.
I would not like to ever see this movie, as I just can't picture Tom Cruise, nice man that he is, in the part of Jack Reacher. Tinkerbelle
There is no way that Tom Cruise is Jack Reacher. I've read all the Reacher books and have a picture of Reacher in my mind. It boggles the mind to think that Cruise could play this part. No way will I ever see this!
i didn't see the film, but i've read all the reacher books. EVERY one says how reacher is huge, 6' 5", 250 lbs. i have a hard time picturing him being played by cruise. i wish they had cast someone truer to the story.
