Overview

Quentin Tarantino wrote and directed this adaptation of Elmore Leonard's 1995 Rum Punch, switching the action from Miami to LA, and altering the central character from white to black. Ruthless arms dealer Ordell Robbie Samuel L. Jackson, who lives with perpetually stoned beach-babe Melanie Bridget Fonda, teams with his old buddy Louis Gara Robert De Niro, just released from prison after serving four years for armed robbery. ATF agent Ray Nicolette Michael Keaton and cop Mark Dargus Michael Bowen bust stewardess Jackie Brown Pam Grier, who was smuggling money into the country for Ordell. Ordell springs Jackie, but when middle-aged bail bondsman Max Cherry Robert Forster picks her up at the jail, he's attracted to her, and they choose a romantic route with detours. Mistrust and suspicions surface after Jackie pits Ordell and the cops against each other, convincing Ordell that she's going to double-cross the cops. Tarantino commented on the film's budget: "Jackie Brown only cost $12 million. You can't lose. You absolutely, positively can't lose. And you don't have to compromise." ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
Quentin Tarantino's unique brand of hip black comedy and deadpan violence works like a charm in Jackie Brown, the follow-up to his seminal Pulp Fiction. Based on the novel Rum Punch by Elmore Leonard Get Shorty, this slick, easygoing caper film stars Pam Grier as an airline stewardess who becomes involved with a bail bondsman Robert Forster after she’s busted smuggling money for gunrunner Samuel L. Jackson. Tarantino gets everything right here: Grier of Foxy Brown fame is perfectly cast as the smart, strong, sexy -- and refreshingly middle-aged -- heroine, and Tarantino punches up her pedigree with a funk-heavy soundtrack designed to evoke classic ‘70s blaxpoitation films. Meanwhile, the combination of Tarantino and Leonard the godfather of cool crime fiction is a match made in heaven: The dialogue snaps, crackles, and pops. But the film's surprise is TV and B-movie veteran Forster, whose Oscar-nominated performance evokes the straight-shooting, rock-solid decency of a bygone era and helps make his nascent screen romance with Grier one of the most appealing you'll ever see. Robert De Niro, Bridget Fonda, and Michael Keaton round out the film's killer cast. Tarantino's style has been endlessly -- and often badly -- imitated, but Jackie Brown proves there’s nothing like the real thing. The two-DVD set includes a making-of documentary, an interview with Tarantino, deleted and alternate scenes, and the complete "Chicks with Guns" video.
USA Today
Adapted from Elmore Leonard's novel Rum Punch, Tarantino's first feature since Pulp Fiction gets boosts from the filmmaker's typically attitude-laden dialogue and plot twists to equal anything in Get Shorty. Mike Clark

    more from this reviewer

    I Also Recommend:

    Pam Grier at her finest

Not since the 1970s has Pam Grier looked and acted better. When Samuel L. Jackson is under the direction of Quentin T. he's funny, smart and crisp. So far, I haven't seen a Quentin movie I haven't liked.

    Tarantino's best

I'm a huge Tarantino fan and I think this is his best film to date, for all of the reasons already covered here in the other reviews... check it out if you haven't seen it yet. This might just be my favorite movie of all time.

Tarantino world does seem to be cool place to be!

Tarantino did a great job with Jackie Brown. This is one of those films which is strange but yet captivating. You’ll definitely feel as though you are watching a "Blaxploitation" flick from the 1970's. Almost to the point that you’ll be wondering what corner Richard Roundtree was hiding behind. Pam Grier, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Forster, Michael Keaton and De Niro are all stellar as the extreme characters they play in this movie which focuses on lost drug money. Tarantino slows down a little and shows his skill at plotting an entertaining tale that doesn't tax your patience. In here, you do get less blood and more characterizations than usual and is unlike either of his first 2 movies. However, this movie is uniquely Quentin T. and exhibits his versatile film making style. when he directs he allows his imagination free rein to experiment and explore. Each of his directorial efforts has been unique, and “Jackie Brown” is another successful experiment. This movie does have a very good dialogue. Not surprising considering this WAS an Elmore Leonard book with Tarantino doing the scripting. Both men have quite a talent for what they do. It is also clear that Tarantino loves what he does, sometimes a little too much. At the end of this, Tarantino’s reprisal of the 70’s blaxploitation genre with its adventures and bizarre paths taken by these characters converge into a great film. mix with action, suspense, and romance tied into a great film. Highly recommended along with it’s soundtrack.

    Great Plot

This is another Tarantino at his best. The way that Pam made the plan to get the money was very clever. This had great acting and great scam that gets pulled off. Its an instant classic. It doesnt has as much violence as reservior dogs, pulp fiction,Kill Bill. Those of you that dont like tarantino i think you will like it so BUY IT!!!

    Jackie Brown

Jackie Brown is an amazing comedy with a story that is just perfect. The acting gracefully given from Pam Grier and Samuel L. Jackson is spectacular. Though it isn't filled with rediculous violence, it is still classic Quentin. Tarantino is a genius by making this a film of his own yet still keeping the original story from Elmore Leonard. Jackie Brown is a great motion picture and shouldn't be missed by anyone.

Slicker than Pulp Fiction... but just as original!

Excellent movie I thouroughly enjoyed every minute! Yes, it is long and has some slow moments but Robert DeNiro is excellent as the ex-con, pot-head, down for whatever side-kick, and I've never seen Pam Grier any better than she is in this role. Two thumbs up!

    Another Winner From Writer/Director Tarantino

Although it is frequently critisized by people I know for being too slow, Jackie Brown is a highly entertaining crime thriller. Pam Grier, Samuel L. Jackson and Robert DeNiro are all in top form. Surprises abound and the dialogue by Tarantino is it's usual hilarious and highly entertaining self. Get this movie!

    GREAT PERFORMANCES

Take 45 minutes off this film and it's an instant classic. Instead its long in the tooth and Michael Keaton as a sock & sandal wearing BATF agent is moronic. That's the bad. The good purely overshadows it. And there plenty of good: First rate work by Samuel Jackson, Pam Grier and veteran extrodinere Robert Forster in a comeback role every actor over 55 would die for. One of the better adaptations of Elmore Leonard's work. Quentin probably wishes he could have got Bobby Womack to do the soundtrack. Maybe next time.

    a brilliant adaptation

I am a big fan of Leonard's and I think Tarantino is the best movie maker alive today so I was excited when I first heard about this film being made. To say I wasn't disappointed is an understatement - Great characters, great dialogue and a wonderfully convoluted plot that works far better than it should. Stop depriving the world of your genius Quentin and make something else, your audience awaits.......
