Overview

This collection brings together four markedly different but uniformly praised World War II-themed features from Japan. The first two entries in the program emerged from the efforts of the cause célèbre Okamoto Kihachi: Japan's Longest Day (1967) dramatizes the tide-turning events of August 15, 1945 - when Japan, on the brink of complete ruination following double atomic bombings from the United States, reached a governmental impasse, and its emperor (Toshiro Mifune) could only move forward by stepping down and thus ending the centuries-old Japanese empire. Kihachi's 1971 Battle of Okinawa also transpires in 1945; it dramatizes the final stand of the Japanese against the Allied forces, which led to the titular battle - one of the bloodiest and most gruesome of all WWII conflicts. Jumping ahead three years, Kosaku Yamashita's 3-hour-plus Father of the Kamikaze relays the biographical story of Takijiro Onishi, an inwardly conflicted admiral who launches a bold and brash strategy to strongarm America into a resolution: kamikaze attacks against the Allied military forces. Finally, Shohei Imamura's 1988 Black Rain (the recipient of two awards at the Cannes Film Festival) follows a family journeying through the ruins of Hiroshima in the wake of the atomic bomb, worried that one of its members will not be married due to impending radiation sickness.
