Entertainment vs. Reality

Yes I have read the book. And I saw this movie with my two older teenage sons. Personally, I grew up on the sanitized war film trash that the Cinema's fed us in the 50' and 60's. I have always been left wondering just how many men died in future conficts because they were molded as kids by this historically distorted propaganda. Today we have the ability, through certain films and documentaries to show our sons, as they approach adulthood, both sides of that heroic coin that our military establishment milks so expertly on our young men. Ultimately it is their decision, but we as parents are obligated to try as hard as we possibly can, to present a clearer picture of realistic military life. That way when they find that they are actually fighting a pointless war, governed by paper soldiers, for corporate interests, just maybe, just maybe, they may just survive it, heart, body, soul! And history will stop repeating itself.

WTF, and they called it a good movie

This was almost worse than Brokeback Mountain.

NOT supposed to be a war movie!!

Jarhead was amazing. Its not supposed to be a war movie. The whole point was the waiting, the waiting for something to happen.. if anything at all. The boredom got to these men and this film depicts THAT. One of my favorite parts in this movie is when they come home, it shows how these men are supposed to adapt back into civilian life and how hard it is. Sam mendes is a great director. This is one time that i can say that the movie was better than the book.

One of the most underrated films of 2005.

It is true, there isnt a lot of action in Jarhead, but I think its important to remember that it isnt really a war movie, but a movie about war. I strongly recommend you read some, if not all of the book first to understand the mindset of Swofford and his Marine brothers, and if you like the book, then see the movie. If you didnt like the book, you could probably skip the movie. I do have to disagree with the reviewer who said Jake Gyllenhaal is a terrible actor. Both he and (especially) Peter Sarsgaard deliver understated performances of simmering agression, anger and frustration. Meanwhile, Sam Mendes deftly interprets the isolation so prevalent in the book.

Very accurate movie

Being a grunt in the Marine corps for 4 years, I can say this movie is exactly what it is like, If a marine says its not an accurate film, then he must not be a grunt, or he never served in the 7th marines. I can relate to almost everything in the film.

Very Good

This movie was really good. If you like Jake you will love this movie, or if you like Marines you will like it too. but i have talked to marines and they say that this movie is nothing like what they do, but I dont think this movie was suppose to show you what they do, but its just suppose to be entertaining

Disappointing

What is this world coming to? Not very action-packed at all. Gives good war movies like Platoon and Saving Private Ryan a bad name. "Jarhead" is NOT a war movie it doesn't even come close. The best scence in the whole movie is watching the famous helicopter bit from Apocalypse Now. And I thought they did kind of copy off of A.N. They try to show how war is supposed to get to these guys and make them go crazy. It never achieves that. Only girls and Brokeback Mountain fans will appreciate this film.

NOT AS GOOD AS I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE

I think its a crock to consider Jarhead a war movie, its even insulting. Forget what you see on the cover, Jake just holds it the whole time, he never fires it once. No battle scenes at all in the movie, you get the privilege of seeing how bored soldiers pass their time while in the middle of the desert. 60% of the movie you see guys' butts which is not quality entertainment. You just get to listen about how the guys have a girl back home and hope that they're not being cheated on. The constant swearing these guys use makes you think that they're Platoon/Full Metal Jacket wannabes, which they are. Jake Gyllenhal is a terrible actor, and I was sad to see Foxx put into such a terrible movie. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!

Very military!

I thought this movie was great. As a member of the military myself, I was able to relate to this guy so well. Though I've never been to Iraq and probably never will, I understand how it is to be away from your family, try to have a relationship when you never see them, and what it feels like to train and wait, and wait and train some more, and one day realize that you're just a waste of government money. I definitely recommend it for any servicemember, and if you're interested in what the military's really like, check it out!

wow... not what you would expect from a "war" movie

this was a good movie i do recommend it because it really helps the viewer understand what these guys are going through and how brainwashed they become after being in the same place for such a long time... it kind of makes the viewer just as anxious as the men in the movie to shoot their guns. Overall it was a good movie

Jarhead Review

Personally, I found this film moving. Jake Gyllanhaal Jamie Foxx, and Peter Sarsgaard were just a few of the amazing actors in this great, yet under-rated film. This movie provided great insight on the life of a marine and demonstrated the side affects of going through the brutal concept of known as violence and war. This movie also showed what war could do to a person both mentally & physically. Throughout all of the drama, slight suspense, and nudity, there was refreshing comedy. I found this movie to be one of the best all year.
