Overview

Directed by Victor Salva, Jeepers Creepers is a stylish, moody American horror film that subverts many of the tired clichés that have plagued the genre in recent years. Although the film is reminiscent of other productions (especially Spielberg's Duel and Jaws), Creepers manages to find its own sense of purpose. It's also one of the more scary American mainstream horror films to come down the pike in awhile. MGM Home Entertainment has done a stellar job with this DVD and obviously felt that the film deserved more than a toss-off release. The film is available in both full screen and letterboxed (1.85:1 enhanced) formats. The transfer for either version is fantastic, although the letterboxed format is preferable for obvious reasons. Many of the film's scenes glow (especially during some of the earlier daylight moments), which is a startling realization when one remembers that the filmmakers have taken such care in what could have been just your average teen horror flick. The audio tracks are also impressive, beautifully highlighting Bennett Salvay's thunderous music score. What's not so impressive, though, is the commentator track with Salva. It's not that it isn't informative or interesting at times, it just doesn't entertain. But Salva is a very gracious host and thanks his crew and the actors numerous times for raising his material above the average horror dreck. But the disc does contain some excellent supplemental material such as a collection of six mini-featurettes that give a nice overview of the production, plenty of deleted and extended scenes (some of which are excellent), a photo gallery, theatrical and TV trailers, and much more. There's also a nifty little Easter Egg on the main menu page; left click after highlighting any of the menu options and will find something staring straight at you.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - R.J. Wafer
Though slick and self-assured in its delivery, Jeepers Creepers opts for genuine monster-movie scares over the self-referential humor of recent teen flicks. A brother and sister, Darryl Justin Long and Trish Gina Philips, take the long way home for Spring Break, and their car breaks down on a long country road with a storied and horrific past: More than 20 years ago, a young couple came to a mysterious and terrible end here, as evidenced by the wreckage of their car and the boy's decapitated body -- neither the girl nor the boy's head were ever found. Before long, Darryl and Trish find themselves mired in a struggle for life and limb -- literally -- against the Creeper Jonathan Breck, a sinister monster who needs his victims' body parts in order to regenerate his own. Setting itself apart from the late-'90s tongue-in-cheek horror of Scream and its peers, Jeepers Creepers plunges into the 21st century with a straightforward nightmare premise and simple cinematic mechanics -- run or die! Atmospherically directed by Victor Salva, the film makes up for its occasionally implausible plotting with a never-ending air of dread, the kind of suspense that horror fans crave. The cast of fresh faces leaves the floor open for the film's real stars, the Creeper and some expert makeup effects.
All Movie Guide - Michael Hastings
Writer/director Victor Salva's genre offering proves more effective than the standard turn-of-the-century teen horror flick, in large part due to its respect for such essential -- but usually ignored -- elements as suspense, pacing, and atmosphere. Jeepers Creepers forgoes the jokey self-referentiality of the Scream series and the nihilistic, gore-for-gore's-sake quality of, say, Final Destination for a more straightforward approach, and -- at least in his film's first hour -- the choice pays off in a big way. As bickering but devoted siblings terrorized by an inhuman creature, Gina Philips and Justin Long have a natural, believable chemistry, which is particularly helpful when the script veers into some of its more ridiculous conceits. If anything, Salva is too enamored with horror conventions: In the last act, he's determined to throw in psychics, police squad showdowns, and even a few allusions to Quasimodo and The Phantom of the Opera. But for the most part, the script keeps it simple, and thanks to ace cinematography and editing, Jeepers Creepers provides an ample supply of economically presented cheap thrills.
Fangoria - Michael Gingold
The film's lack of self-reflexive humor is refreshing for the teen horror subgenre, and Salva is to be commended for his commitment to a straightforward scare scenario.

    I Also Recommend:

    Great horror flick:)

I know 4 stars might seem insulting to a movie so original for being a creature feature, but to be honest, I think we could've done without seeing Mr. Jeepers. The first half of the movie scared the crap out of me (and my mom) for that matter and she thinks horror movies are all cheesy. As for the second movie I'd have given it 3 stars for being a lot more of a generic monster movie. Below are movies, games and books that will have you biting your nails.

    I Also Recommend:

Jeepers Creepers - IMO a pretty good horror movie

From what I remembered of the trailer to the movie when it first came out, I saw the two main characters in the car as they were looking at the creeper who just stood in the middle of the road without his hat. I liked it and thought it was a good horror movie. A favorite for me except well the ending I guess. This is the story of a brother and sister name Darryl and Trish driving on the road heading home. They drive by a church and see someone throwing something down a hole and just drive off while unsure of what they thought they saw. When that person drives away, Darryl and Trish go back since Darryl wants to know what could be down there. Once they do they're never the same again and find themselves being followed by a creature known as the Creeper. The design and look for the creeper was interesting. Had a western look going on. I liked how this time you don't have a couple but a brother and sister. I don't know but I find that in most of the horror movies its always a couple as the main characters or the girl that's the main character. Maybe its just me? In this movie its a little different I guess. The first time I watched the film I was a little surprised by the ending. Glad the film didn't have too much gore and other things. Nowadays horror movies are all about the gore and etc. Sometimes it can be annoying and distracting. Anyway, the story I thought was good. Some scares here and there. If you like scary movies and or suspense movies then I recommend you see this. Now the sequel well....

Great Piece of Horror and Film-making

The genre of horror comes in many forms-slasher, psychological, suspense and thriller. This overlooked movie by Victor Salva contains all those elements. It has a great story, excellent character development and some of the scariest scenes you will ever see...not much gore, just bitting your fingernails suspense. The movie is beautifully filmed, which creates the entire atmosphere and mood.

I watch this movie at least weekly, and this is something I do not do with most movies I own, but this one is just so well done, for what it is.

Side note: While this is excellent in everyway, the sequel is very much a let down...unless you wish to see many shirtless teenage boys.

    SCARY!

If you like scary, horror films then this movie is for you. The first Jeepers Creepers movie is the scariest. I've seen this movie at least a hundred times and I still get the chills. A must have in your movie collection.

    I liked it!

I am a connoisseur of scary movies, and I really enjoyed this one. It is genuinely creepy, with comic undertones. I was compelled to see the sequel "Jeepers Creepers II" after seeing the first one. They were both good.

    Not reccomended

I thought this movie was absolutely horrible. It started off good with a suspenseful beginning, but it got so unrealistic. I mean the monster is made up of other peoples body parts and he just goes around killing everyone, yeah right. It didn't even have a good ending so I would definetly not watch it if I were you.

    Jeepers Creepers

I liked this one and the Creeper did look creepy especially near the end how they revealed him in his other stage form thing with wings and well the movie is interesting and is better than the sequel Jeepers Creepers 2. Wonder what the third (prequel) would be like.

    very good

this movie was good in my opinion. but the more the movie went on, the more dull it started to get. so overall, its a very good movie but lets you down the more the movie goes on. I still think its worth a check though.

Horror to it's upmost Wes Craven type ability.

The Movie was great. It sent chills down your spine, especially the part when they saw him dump the sheets down the drain pipe. The Barnes and Noble explanation was totally screwed up. Their car didn't break down. And it was the girl that lost her head, not the guy you freakin' morons.

    Scared the Jeepers outta me!

I loved the brother and sister banter in this movie. Very real. Their acting coupled with the ''what's around the corner'' thriller scenes kept me riveted, drawing me to watch it over and over and over. JC2 is coming out soon.

THE WORST OF THE MOVIE OF THE CENTURY!!!!!

This was the worst movie I have ever seen in my life. What a piece of the junk from beginning to the very end. I can't believe they wasted money and time to create this movie. There wasn't much of a storyline to follow. In the beginning it was supposed to be a serial killer then it becomes some weird monster later on. Talk about not making up you mind on what a movie should be about. I don't understand how anyone rated this as being a good movie!!! If I had a choice this movie would be a zero instead of a star b/c it doesn't even deserve that. If you want to watch a really good horror movie don't watch this one.

    WORST MOVIE OF ALL TIME!!!

If I could rate this a zero I probably would. There was a lot of bad acting and the story didn't make sense at all. Please do not waste you time to watch this movie because it was horrible. There are so many other examples of good horror movies so do not watch this one.

    Boring!!!

Okay, at first, it was a good movie... But seriously, the stuff at the end?? With the flying and everything?? COME ON!! What in the world was that all about? The movie started off very well, but in order to succeed, you have to end if off well. I've been a fan of horror for many years, this one just didn't cut it.
