Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Chas Turner
Born in Great Britain in the early 1990s, this television adaptation of P. G. Wodehouse's comic masterpiece follows the high-tea hijinks of the ever-resourceful valet Jeeves (Stephen Fry of A Fish Called Wanda) and his well-meaning but eternally dim master, Bertie Wooster (Hugh Laurie of Sense & Sensibility). With its lead characters fulfilling long-honored comic archetypes -- the dense aristocrat and schemingly clever servant -- plus a heavy dose of brilliantly dry Brit wit accentuated by the acclaimed Fry and Laurie, Jeeves & Wooster has rightfully become a television phenomenon. After running a mere 4 seasons (the English actually call them "series") and 23 episodes, ending in 1993, the show has garnered a near-cult following, warranting this lavish set of the complete first series. The 5 hilarious episodes included here are "Jeeves Arrives," "Golf Tournament," "The Gambling Event," "Hunger Strike," and "The Matchmaker." For those interested in studying the show's development and seeing the always-evolving relationship between the title characters, A&E Home Video also offers the complete second series on a convenient 2-DVD set.

I've seen quite a few of the Jeeves and Wooster series, and these are like them - clean, English humour. Jeeves has his usual, comic way of speaking, while Bertie continues to talk in his idiomatic way. Some of the scrapes he finds himself in have the typical and subtle English comedy to them, which make for a highly enjoyable time.
