Overview

Originally released in the early days of DVD, Jerry Maguire had great sound and picture, but nothing more. The release of this two-disc special edition has certainly changed that and the lack of extras on the first release is made up in droves. The first disc, with the movie, has a commentary track with director Cameron Crowe and stars Tom Cruise, Renee Zellweger, and Cuba Gooding Jr. The second disc, though, has the wealth of supplemental features.

Here the movie is presented again, but in a smaller box with a video commentary of the four participants. It's the same commentary as the first disc, and while entertaining to watch them interact, there are far too many dry spells. Obviously they enjoy just watching the movie again. The remainder of the extras on the second disc are plentiful, including deleted scenes and rehearsal footage (both with optional commentary), a made-up shoe commercial with "Rod Tidwell", a Bruce Springsteen music video, photo gallery, theatrical trailers, and a brief featurette with cast and crew interviews. As for picture and sound, they're impeccable. The 1.85:1 image is representational of the theatrical experience with nicely saturated colors and solid, deep blacks. The 5.1 Dolby Digital track is also impressive, with just the right amount of surround material and clean, distinct use of the all important front speakers. Dialogue is clear and never distorted. All in all, this special edition is equal to most produced, in all respects.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
The surprise box-office smash of 1996, Jerry Maguire reestablished Tom Cruise as a star of romantic comedies, earned stardom for Renée Zellweger, and won writer-director Cameron Crowe Almost Famous a spot on Hollywood's A-list. It also scored an Oscar for supporting player Cuba Gooding Jr. and thrust a new catchphrase -- "Show me the money!" -- into the popular lexicon. Crowe's zesty romance has an enduring charm: Cruise still shines as the brash but vulnerable sports agent whose moment of uncharacteristic frankness gets him fired. Opening his own small agency, the dispirited go-getter receives encouragement from his only employee, a single mom Zellweger who secretly adores him. Tom's twinkling eyes and toothy grin notwithstanding, the show is nearly stolen by Gooding's comically conceited athlete -- Maguire's lone client -- who makes his demands very clear. Crowe's Oscar-nominated script sparkles with clever lines and fleshes out characters in ways not typical of breezy Hollywood love stories. This winning combination of snappy storytelling, endearing characters, and incisive direction keeps Jerry Maguire fresh and contemporary; it's a modern classic that merits addition to every home library. The new DVD Special Edition is a two-disc set: Disc One presents the film itself, accompanied by commentary from Crowe, Cruise, Zellweger, and Gooding; Disc Two features a video commentary from these principals, deleted scenes, and rehearsal footage, with commentaries by Crowe, a profile of sports agent Drew Rosenhaus, a making-of featurette, Bruce Springsteen's music video for the song "Secret Garden," and much more.
All Movie Guide
Jerry Maguire juggles romance, drama, sports, and comedy as it chronicles an egotistical sports agent's discovery of what's really important to him. Writer-director Cameron Crowe populates his sprawling script with a bevy of talented actors: He designed the title role for Tom Cruise, and the actor turns in one of the most genuine, nuanced performances of his career. As the talented football pariah Rod Tidwell, the enthusiastic Cuba Gooding Jr. earned a Best Supporting Actor award -- as well as a place in movie catch-phrase history. Renee Zellweger owes Crowe a similar debt: the director and Cruise fought the studio to cast an unknown in the role, and her naivete and infectious optimism provide a perfect foil for Cruise's (initial) slickness. Jerry Maguire's take on sports is refreshing as well, neither glamorizing the industry nor wallowing in its supposed underbelly. Though predictable, the film's feel-good resolution is heart-felt and not manipulative.
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert

Cameron Crowe's overstuffed but exuberantly humane Jerry Maguire is a Tom Cruise vehicle that gives equal time to brilliantly cast co-stars in elaborately conceived roles. Mike Clark

    Soundtrack Is Very Strong

Jerry Maguire holds up well. It might not be the best movie ever, the way it might have felt the first time around, but it's pretty darn good. People who are interesting behaving in funny and wrenching ways. Of course, the soundtrack is very strong. I went right out and bought the soundtrack too. A convincing mix of popular genres, great performers, maybe not enough jazz.

    Great little touches

There are so many wonderful moments in this movie, it's hard to know where to start. The action away from the action is terrific. Renee's facial expressions and body language when Tom has his back turned are subtle but wonderful. The exchange between Cuba and Renee after she sees Tom's struggle on the wedding day is great. And, the interplay between Dorothy and her sister is just wonderful. Of course, the main action is pretty spectacular, too. I love this movie. See the DVD. The commentary is lots of fun.

    Lots of fun

I've been spending the last six hours watching the DVD of ''Jerry Maguire.'' It is really fun, especially watching Cameron, Tom, Renee and Cuba as they watch the film and talk about it. When I saw this film originally in 1996, I literally cried the last twenty minutes of the film. This time through, it was only on and off for the last 20 minutes. What an emotional film. I love the script, the little touches and the performances. This is a great film and the DVD that does it justice.

    Remarkable.

Tom Cruise is at the top of his game with this movie. He's perfect for the role of a sports agent, mainly because of his long-term star status, dealings with agents, and high school athletic background, enough said. Renee Zellweger comes across as the perfect screwed up girl-next-door, loyal to a fault, but the character widens as the story goes along. A good point to bring up is the inclusion of Paul McCartney's ''Junk'' (there are two: ''Singalong Junk,'' and ''Junk'' both on the ''McCartney'' album and I suspect that ''Junk'' is the actual song used as I didn't hear the lyrics, maybe it's in the credits and I missed it. The movie is about a fired sports agent who is trying to hold on to his one client (Cuba Gooding, Jr.,) his girlfriend (Zellweger) and his new business. Cruise seemed to bottom out after ''Born on the Fourth of July'' and bombed with ''Days of Thunder'' (which I thought was a good ''Top Gun'' on wheels. Through a series of good moves (Anne Rice's ''Interview with a Vampire,'' ''A Few Good Men,'' and Grisham's ''The Firm,'' he has come out unscathed. Jerry McGuire is as much a classic as ''Top Gun.''

This Film Speaks of Real Truth in Life

We all come to those points in life where we question what we do. In this case, Jerry Maguire is that person, questioning his carreer as a sports agent, who only seems to care about the job, rather than the people he represents. After being fired for writing his ideas in a mission statement, a woman who works in his profession quits with him, and they begin a new company. In the process of loosing all he knows in life, he realizes how painful and hard life can be, and how important loyalty, friendship, and love are. This film is one of the best movies of 1996. As well as a wonderful romantic comedy, that speaks the truth about life, and love.

    SHOW ME THIS FILM!

Get beyond the phrase du jour, ''Show me the money'' and you'll find this to be a gem of a picture. Tom Cruise almost steals the film from Oscar winner Cuba Gooding, Jr.(Best Supporting Actor)...thanks to a generously superb script by director Cameron Crowe who gets the most from all his players. Jay Mohr shines as a weasel sports agent. A complete film experience.
