    Powerful and Dramatic

I greatly enjoyed this modern production of JCS. All of the actors in the cast deliver superb performances. This version of the beloved Andrew Lloyd Webber classic is powerful, dramatic, and will leave you in tears each time you watch it. Glenn Carter is wonderful as Jesus, and Jerome Pradon provides an emotional and raw portrayal of Judas Iscariot.

Stick with the 1973 film version

I went out and bought this version before seeing it. I thought it would be great but it was very, very disappointing. I ended up not even watching the whole thing and it went into my give away pile. If you like the musical stick with the orignal 1973 movie with Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson.

Great Music - the Rest Well...

Many people have critisized JCSS for being too sacraligous, If you had that view about the first release, then hold onto to your hats for this version. Where as the original I felt was a little loose with its interpretation of the bible, this version takes it a step further, and actrually mocks Crist, and his beleivers. When Judas returns from the dead to sing the theme song, He actually climbs onto the Cross Jesus is carrying and will sing into his face 'Who are you, what do you think you are?'. Where as the music for this version is in almost everyway superior to the orignal movie. The attitude in this film I find insulting and demeaning. Stick with the original, it is far more enjoyable and uplifting.

Great Production - Best I've ever seen

This was by far the best production of this I've ever seen. What made this so enjoyable for me were the performances, direction, and production concept. Glenn Carter is spectactular (he has a great voice as you'd expect, and his acting was even better); Jerome Pradon gave an incredibly strong and charismatic performance; and the entire ensemble does a great job. Gale Edwards direction is agressive storytelling that reflects an indepth and sensitive understanding of the story, characters, and setting. And finally, the production value was incredibly high and represented a new approach to theatrical entertainment. This production was shot on a sound stage using a theatrical set, but filmed using completely modern cinematic techniques. The most obvious benefit of filming a play on a sound stage is the use of multiple cameras that bring you right into the action. Everything about this production draws you in and makes you a part of the story. I highly recommend this DVD!

    Hm-m-m, where is Jesus?

For starters, this movie is not about Jesus. Well, not about that Jesus. The action takes place in a concrete desert of a former industrial town. My first guess was New York, but later they started to call it Jerusalem. The biggest attraction is a replica of Berlin Wall, at least it's painted the same way. A gang holds the place. By some coincidence, the gang leader is called Jesus Christ and his lieutenants have names of apostles. Police raid makes us think that this should be a future as policemen are dressed like Darth Vader. One of the apostles has a tattoo of a cross on his forearm. Juda commits a suicide in the middle of the movie, and then continues to sing and comment for the rest of time. And, yes, animal right activists beware, there is a lot of black leaver, even female angels wear black leaver bikinis. Clearly this gang is also a semi-religious sect, and the fathers of the town are worried about that. Head of the priests (Afro-American, like about a half of the gang) decides to arrest and execute the leader of the gang, while watching them on a surveillance cameras. However their first attempt (during sermon, I assume) fails because the crowd is waiving ¿schmeisers¿ (WWII German machine guns) and few AK-47s. When the leader of the gang gets traders from the Temple, the merchandize left includes working TVs, showing military airplanes and warships at their bloody work. I am not completely sure of the meaning of this scene. They probably meant that the world is bad and deadly. On another hand planes and ships were American, hence Christian, so it could be the other way around. Pilat is dressed like a Nazi general, probably, SS, and his refusal to crucify an innocent man makes him almost sympathetic. Well, I wash my hands. Now it¿s up to you to decide, if you really want to see this movie. Sapienti Sat. Dixi.

    Outstanding production!

Never have I watched a Jesus Christ Superstar which really nailed the characters. Jerome Pradon's Judas is played so remarkably, we can feel his torture and angst. This version of the story leaves me breathless and exhausted while going through the characters' depictions.

    Someone finally got it right!

I fell in love with the original soundtrack back in the 70s, but until now, every production I had seen was disappointing in one way or another. Director Gale Edwards brings a grittiness and immediacy to the production that was previously lacking. The vocal performances and orchestration are outstanding, and completely captivating. The sets and costumes are more post-apocalyptic than anything else, but manage to convey both the past and the present. We have had this DVD since Christmas, and end up playing it every couple of weeks. This production also does a good job of crystallizing the basic political conflict between the peaceful message of Christ and the military expectations of those searching for the ''Messiah''. Ultimately the production is both entertaining and intriguing. Bottom line- This production works.
