Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Marlene McCampbell
Beautifully shot in Morocco and Malta, the Emmy-nominated miniseries Jesus dramatizes the story of the humble carpenter believed by many to be the biblical Messiah. Jeremy Sisto portrays a Christ very much of this earth -- laughing, dancing, even gracefully fending off his friend Lazarus' marriage-minded daughter. But nowhere is His humanity more evident than in the warm familiarity of mother and son. Mary Jacqueline Bisset functions almost as a benevolent stage mom, nudging her laid-back son that "it is time" to fulfill His destiny. This stirring production conveys both the emotional lure of Jesus' compassion and the raw excitement of His miracles -- walking on the surface of a stormy sea, bringing Lazarus back to life -- that inflamed His devoted disciples. The film also shows how this alarmed the existing power structure, leading all too soon to betrayal and agonizing crucifixion at the hands of Roman governor Pontius Pilate, played by a mesmerizing Gary Oldman. Among the script's less effective contemporary touches are Mary and former prostitute Mary Magdalene a miscast Debra Messing bonding over the hurtfulness of men. But Jeroen Krabbé is a dazzling Satan in a business suit, tempting Christ with power and chortling at the mayhem to come: "The world at war -- what a concept!" The film ends with Jesus' triumphant resurrection from the dead, inspiring His followers to spread the teachings that have echoed through the centuries.

A JESUS FOR THE THIRD MILLENIUM

The epic miniseries ''Jesus '' is a magnificent production. The divinity of Christ shines through His humanity as portrayed by Jeremy Sisto. This is a Jesus that people can relate to and not the religious icon He is presented as in other productions. The Gospels were never intended to be a biography in our sense but a teaching devise to bring people to the awareness that this Jesus is indeed the Son of God. It is refreshing to see a Jesus who questions, gets upset and can have relationships. The cast is first rate and SHOULD HAVE won the Emmy as best miniseries.

One of the best Jesus films I've seen

This is the true Jesus - God made Man, with all the terror, love, fear, joy, confusion, and ultimate decision-making (a.k.a. "reasoning") of being human. Unlike the Hollywood standards, "King of Kings," "Jesus of Nazareth," and "The Greatest Story Ever Told," this Jesus is real - and true to the gospels, uninfluenced by Paul or the American Protestant myth of God made Impossibly Un-human. I can believe that yes, THIS Jesus loves me. And I want to know Him. Even Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" doesn't really show Jesus' loving human personality. If you're just Divine, then the crucifixion that Gibson accurately portrays is not much of a sacrifice. Only Jesus' HUMAN nature and HUMAN suffering redeemed the rest of us. That's what sets apart my two recommendations, as well.

The worst Jesus movie ever made!

When I saw the previews for this movie, I was excited and wanted to see it right away! So, when I rented it @ blockbuster on VHS, I was SO DISAPPOINTED!!! They changed EVERYTHING, and it was NO WHERE near faithful to the scriptures! First, Jesus seems to be so confused about His true nature, and doesn't believe He's God's Son. When Joseph died, Jesus even angrily said to Mary, "Joseph was my father, not God!" Also, Mary Magdalene and Jesus were closerthanthis to getting married! (of course, Mary, Jesus's mother, tells Him to NOT marry Mary Magdalene). Also, when Jesus goes to John the Baptist to be baptized, He asks, "What must I do to be baptized?" and John responds, "You must confess your sins..." and we know THAT DIDN'T REALLY HAPPEN because Jesus never sinned! To wrap this, stay away from this movie. in fact, if you own a copy of this movie, throw it in the trash where it belongs! Save your money and buy either "Jesus of Nazareth", "Gospel of John", "Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ", or "Visual Bible: Matthew." Watch something that's ACCURATE and tells the truth about Jesus!

Get the Gospel of John Instead

I thought the Gospel of John was much better. I was a little decieved by this movie. Yes Jesus was human, but he was also in control

    Jesus Goes Hollywood

I thought this movie was unrealistic and untrue to scripture. Scripture was paraphrased too much. Why do we try to reach America by changing who Jesus really was/is? We don't make a black Jesus to reach the African Americans, so why make a Hollywood Jesus to reach ''Generation Y and X''? On the other hand, the 1977 movie Jesus of Nazareth gets 5 stars!

    Jesus is ''THE MAN''

I do alot of reading on Jesus which I enjoy alot. But I must say, that seeing is better than just reading. This movie is just right for any group of people. I would strongly recommend this movie to ANYBODY even if they don't believe. But as for me and my family???? We know that JESUS IS THE MAN!!!! I give much credit to the directors and cast! What a wonderful job. I agree that this movie should've won the EMMY for miniseries. OH WELL....We all know this movie is ONE OF KIND!!!

A Jesus I Can Relate To!

I have seen other ''Jesus'' movies, and this one is by far the very best! Now THIS is a Jesus I can relate to. He's not portrayed as some spiritual mystic or ''spook'', but a wonderful man. Someone I wish I could have physically walked and talked with, and who I would have liked very much. I was waiting for the usual TV romance between Jesus and Mary Magdeline, but much to their credit, the script didn't even go in that direction. An excellent movie! I would recommend it to anyone who has a hard time relating to Jesus in their personal life.

    Remarkable

This is the movie on the life of Christ, that seems to me to be much more realistic than other versions. Jesus has been portrayed as a very human person with feelings. I will watch this one, again and again!
