Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
Joan Girardi (Amber Tamblyn) is a fairly typical 16-year-old with an extraordinary secret: She has conversations with God. It's not a mighty voice or a big ball of light, however; God delivers his messages through everyday people who come in contact with Joan. Some of the Big Guy's incarnations have included "Cafeteria Lady God," "TV Anchorman God," and "Goth Kid God," and all of them give Joan vague instructions that lead to her involvement in other people's lives. In "Double Dutch," for example, "Pizza Delivery God" instructs Joan to learn how to jump rope with a group of inner-city teens, one of whom, she discovers, is in need of a home. Joan's family -- father Will (Joe Mantegna), mother Helen (Mary Steenburgen), and brothers Kevin (Jason Ritter) and Luke (Michael Welch) -- don't know about her gift and can't understand her sudden interest in things like boat building ("The Boat") or piano lessons ("Do the Math"). In addition to following God's plans, Joan must also negotiate such common teenage problems as taking her driver's exam, standing up to the school bully, and discovering she has romantic feelings for her friend Adam (Christopher Marquette). While God plays a large role in Joan of Arcadia, creator Barbara Hall carefully skirts the issue of religion. It’s rarely mentioned, in fact. In the tradition of Highway to Heaven and Touched by an Angel, Joan of Arcadia affords faithful families quality contemporary drama that respects their beliefs.
