Mad Dogs and Englishmen is strange to see today -- on so many levels that it's like a really off-kilter music/sociological education. For starters, in terms of its origins, it is probably the granddaddy of all A&M films. It's difficult to imagine, apart from some Herb Alpert promotional clips, what the company would have produced before this visually, much less anything that could stand on its own as a feature. As a movie, it pulses with energy from the opening frames, which depict an anxious crowd of would-be attendees frozen out of the sold-out show at the Fillmore East in New York, and one gets a tactile sense of what it was like around the Fillmore on a night when a really good act was there. Then there's the backstage stuff with Joe Cocker, Leon Russell, et al., and various groupies and hangers-on, but in less than eight minutes that seem like two, we're at the show. Between the performance sequences, we get shots of the band members doping, drinking, womanizing, and generally doing what rock stars did in those days. One unintentionally ironic moment has the band rehearsing Leon Russell's song "Superstar," which was to earn millions for A&M in a decidedly different version by the Carpenters. That's just before the band and its entourage -- dozens in all -- arrive in Plattsburg, NY, for a show at a local college. One moment in the Texas swing of the tour has become unintentionally funny across the decades, when a veteran groupie explains herself and her motivations and cites Mike Pinder of the Moody Blues as an authority who told her that, without the groupies, tours would be truly wretched experiences. Amid all of the cross cutting, there are some great musical moments: Cocker's performances of "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" and "The Letter," and Claudia Lennear's rendition of "Let It Be" (which are the highlights of the movie's first hour). There's also an ugly moment in the second hour when a lunatic begins verbally accosting the band members for their lifestyle before being ejected by the management. The whole viewing experience is rather bracing, even more so decades later, when touring and music have become much more managed and predictable.

    YOU will Not Believe !!!!!

    This is the Best Concert Footage I have ever seen filmed from the 69-72 ERA. I saw this Movie in 1970 and I believe it took 15 years to get a copy. In 1986 I ran into Bobby Keys in Lubbock, TX at Fat Dawgs were we discussed the Tour !!! I was in Rock & Roll Heaven that Day!! Bobby was there .. you will also see him in the DVD. I have a VHS .. that is why I am here .. time for the 5.1 DVD .... GET IT ... "anybody want a Tequila SunRise ? !!!" coming from a skinny sax player from Slaton, TX on a Plane with Joe Cocker, Leon Russell, and the rest of a Super Band !!!! A must DVD for your Collection !!!!

    Joe Cocker: Mad Dogs and Englishmen

    In my recent rating/review hyperbole I confused Leon's concert ensemble with an album of his:Asylum ChoirII. Before posting please substitute Shelter People for Asylum Choir. However I've never gotten Claudia Linnear's name or any thing else about her confused. I am still male & still breathing. Check out this DVD and a fairly obscure reference will make sense. Amen

    Joe Cocker: Mad Dogs and Englishmen

    Having lived in San Francisco and Madison Wisconsin from '65-'73 I attended more concerts than I can count or remember (B.B. King's 1st ''major university'' concert, an unannounced Sunday afternoon freebie by Quicksilver, just missed Woodstock but caught the Stones at Altamont-just about every legendary band and great from James Brown to Woody Herman's Big Band ; missed the Beatles] No one, not the Dead, not Jimi Hendricks held a candle to Leon Russell and his Assylum Choir. Energy ... Excitment ... WOW! Forget Joe Cocker, this is Leon and the Choir's film once the music begins. There was no way I could've missed his concert having seen this ''movie'' in a half empty lecture hall at U.W. The acoustics were poor but it didn't matter; I knew I'd seen the best rock film to date. Until ''The Last Waltz'' ('78) there wasn't a film to compare. Buy it or rent it, this has concert footage you'll find truly amazing.

    I saw the movie when it came out. I've also seen Leon Russell in concert. The songs are still wonderful and memorable. Joe may be singing, but this is Leon's movie from beginning to end. Puts a smile on my face.

    Get the music CD's instead

    Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen concerts are among the best CD's you can own, but this Movie is another matter. I really wanted to like this movie but as much as they tried to imitate the Woodstock method of movie making, this documentary is a just boring. Thankfully this DVD has a feature which will allow you to skip the documentary and watch the concert footage itself but you would be better off buying the CD's of these great concerts as this movie does not do it justice. A real disappointment

    Finally found it!

    I've been looking for this video for quite a while. It's a classic featuring Joe Cocker & Leon Russell. Great concert footage as well as some fun lifestyle stuff. Also radio interviews with Tom Donahue in S.F. and some geek in Iowa.. ''what do you do in the band?'' Marty Manning, 99.9 KEZ, Phx.
