Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
The incomparable Ian Holm contributes a bravura performance to Joe Gould's Secret, a lovingly nostalgic drama set in New York's Greenwich Village during the 1940s. Holm is vibrant and profane as the film's title character, a colorful Village habitué who claims to be compiling an oral history of New York while cadging food and drink from the local merchants. Director Stanley Tucci The Imposters plays New Yorker scribe Joseph Mitchell, a gentlemanly Southerner who embraces the garrulous Gould as a perfect subject for one of his profiles and becomes embroiled in the eccentric's schemes. The physical attributes of downtown Manhattan during the '40s are recreated with scrupulous attention to detail, and Tucci replicates its bohemian ambiance as well. His talented ensemble cast includes Patricia Clarkson, Steve Martin, Susan Sarandon, and Hope Davis, all of whom, alongside Tucci himself, lend sterling support to the dynamic Holm. Often hilarious and occasionally poignant, Joe Gould's Secret is always compelling; it's a film that not only withstands but demands repeated viewings.
Entertainment Weekly - Michael Sauter
Subtly plumbing the deeper ties that unite this writer and his subject, Tucci’s film is a moving rumination on real and invented lives.
