Overview

This Spyros Melaris-directed documentary, In Spite Of All Dangers, is packaged along with fifty minutes of John Lennon audio, and a slick 32 page booklet in this DVD collection. The documentary itself tends to be sensational with an emphasis on the morbid, crying fans and news reports of the assassination of Lennon open the one hour program and extend well into the first half of the film. For those who need to know ghoulish details of this horrific moment in rock history, Melaris liberally offers the sounds and the images. The next phase addressed after the murder is the return of the MBE along with news footage of Lennon speaking. There's also the bed in, commentary on Yoko Ono's influence on John, and insight from Tony Caulder, friend and publicity person for The Beatles, as well as Kate Millet and engineer Dennis Ferrante. As these aren't the most notable of Beatles' experts, it is the news footage and interview clips with The Beatle himself that make this desirable for the hardcore fan. Well packaged by Music Video Distributors a more respectful film could be generated just from You!Tube clips and interviews with Beatle authors. A music video of The Overtures performing Dennis Pugsley's interpretation of Lennon's idea for a song, "In Spite Of All The Danger," recorded at Abbey Road Studios, is pleasant enough pop and, actually, a pretty good tune - respectfully devoted to the man who inspired it. But the documentary is a bit of a hodge podge and with half of it spent on Lennon's death, not his life, it renders this package a curious oddity, necessary only for those who want to collect everything Lennon. The separate CD with audio of John Lennon speaking is worthwhile.
