John Wayne - John Ford Film Collection

Overview

The first of John Ford's "Cavalry Trilogy," Fort Apache stars John Wayne as captain Kirby York and Henry Fonda as Custer clone Lt. Col. Owen Thursday. Resentful of his loss in rank and transfer to the West after serving gallantly in the Civil War, the vainglorious Thursday insists upon imposing rigid authority on rough-and-tumble Fort Apache. He is particularly anxious to do battle with the local Indians, despite York's admonitions that the trouble around the fort is being fomented not by the so-called savages ...

He is particularly anxious to do battle with the local Indians, despite York's admonitions that the trouble around the fort is being fomented not by the so-called savages but by corrupt white Indian agents. Thursday nonetheless ends up in a climactic set-to with Indian chief Cochise. He and his men are needlessly slaughtered, but the Eastern press builds "Thursday's Charge" into an incident of conspicuous valor--and York, ever loyal to the cavalry, is not about to tell the whole truth. The bare bones of Fort Apache's plotline are fleshed out with several subplots, including the romance between Thursday's daughter Philadelphia Shirley Temple and Lt. Mickey O'Rourke John Agar, the son of Fort Apache veteran Sgt. Michael O'Rourke Ward Bond. There's also plenty of time for the expected drunken-brawl humor of Victor McLaglen. Not in the least politically correct, Fort Apache is a classic of its kind, and together with Rio Grande 1950 the best of the John Ford/John Wayne Cavalry films.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
The legendary careers of actor John Wayne and director John Ford are inextricably bound together. It was Ford who gave Wayne his first important break and the subsequent roles that helped define his iconic stature. With Wayne as his larger-than-life leading man, Ford was able to craft films whose monumental power drew from the actor's presence. Eight of their collaborations -- three of them making their DVD debuts -- are included in this deluxe box set, anchored by two-disc Special Editions of Stagecoach (1939) and The Searchers (1956). The former, a seminal western, made Wayne a star; while the latter is a Ford masterpiece that featured Wayne's most gripping performance. Both have been remastered, although Stagecoach, for which no original negative material exists, doesn't look significantly better than its previous DVD incarnation. The bonus materials, however, more than compensate for whatever minor shortcomings the worn preprint exhibits. Together, the feature-length American Masters episode, "John Ford / John Wayne: The Filmmaker and the Legend," and the newly produced documentary, Stagecoach: A Story of Redemption, provide valuable context for both this landmark film and the complex Wayne-Ford relationship. The Searchers: Ultimate Collector's Edition is a fan's bonanza that includes a full-length documentary, various featurettes, a commentary by Peter Bogdanovich, full-color reproductions of the 36-page press book, and a Dell Comics adaptation, among other goodies. The three titles appearing on disc for the first time are The Long Voyage Home (1940, a not entirely successful Eugene O'Neill adaptation, redeemed by Gregg Toland's brilliant cinematography), Fort Apache (1948, first of Ford's classic Cavalry Trilogy), and The Wings of Eagles (a 1957 biopic of Navy flyer and author Frank "Spig" Wead). Rounding out the set are the previously released WW II epic They Were Expendable (1945), and the westerns 3 Godfathers (1948) and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949). Warner Bros.' handsome presentation and packaging make this a very appealing collection for everyone from casual movie buffs to serious film students investigating Ford's important work to those who are simply fans of the Duke.

    Raves

I bought this set for my dad for Father's Day. I remember watching John Wayne movies with him as a kid and my brother suggested DVD's. He called me (he hates the phone so it was a big deal) to say thank you and that it was the best gift he had ever been given. He has since watched every DVD and has raved about each one. I will be buying more of these since it was such a hit.
