Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Go, go, Joseph! Staged for home video, this lavish $8 million production of the beloved Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice musical is the perfect encore to the 1998 video release of CATS. Recreating his stage triumph, Donny Osmond again dons the Joseph loincloth as the favorite son of Jacob Richard Attenborough and sibling rival of all his bitter brothers. By turns clever and campy, this exuberant Dreamcoat chronicles Joseph's fall from grace and triumphant rise as second in command to the Egyptian Pharaoh a showstopping Elvis-like turn by Robert Torti. Save for one slightly naughty seduction scene between Joseph and the "evil" wife of slave-owning millionaire Potiphar Joan Collins in a funny casting coup, Dreamcoat is a family-friendly show. Among the show's best-known songs are "Any Dream Will Do," "One More Angel," the stirring "Close Every Door," and "Go, Go, Joseph." Joseph's downtrodden brothers' comedic lament is another highpoint. Webber-Rice and Donny Osmond fans will find this Dreamcoat's a keeper.

    Always amazing!

I have loved this show for a long time and now I get to share the experience with my daughter! We find ourselves singing the songs in the car on the way to school.

The show is fun, colorful, funny and you can't help but sing along! Plus, what woman who loved Donny Osmond as a young girl would not want to see him all grown up and in a loin cloth?!

The entire cast is just superb! Good for all ages too!

    I Also Recommend:

I will 'review' all my purchases from B&N...

So far, 'all' my purchases from B&N have come thru with no problems. I give kudos to all departments involved. Every book, and DVD that I have ordered have been delivered on time, and 'all' have been exactly what I ordered. The DVD in question, 'Joseph', I ordered for my wife, and she loves it. She has watched it many times. (We saw the play 'on stage')
All other purchases, I have been very satisfied with. I will continue to
order from B&N, 'online', knowing that I get will be what I ordered.
Thank You, B&N, for being such an excellent source for me. Again, I give
    B&N kudos!

    BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

This movie was so cheesy, it made me want to throw up. Donnie Osmond is so ridiculous, it takes a lot to try not to laugh at him. And that hair, he looks like female impersonator. In third grade, they made us watch this and I've hated it ever since. This movie was so ridiculous!!! Don't take me wrong, I am a christian and I love this story in the bible but this movie is so dissapointing!!!

    Colorful and Extremely Entertaining!

I love ''Joseph''! It is fun, energized, and colorful. I have known about and been familiar with the songs for many years, and now I have new favorites. However, I never really knew that much about the show. The video has shown me how entertaining ''Joseph'' really is. The show is colorful and really fun to watch. After many years, I now have a great love for it. I also like songs I didn't really fancy before. One of these songs is ''One More Angel in Heaven''. I had never liked that one too much, but now I do, because the fast parts of the somg were not included on the CD I was able to listen to. I like other songs even more now, too. I believe that anyone who likes musicals would enjoy ''Joseph''. However, even if your young children liked ''Annie'' and ''The Music Man'', that doesn't mean that they'll want to watch or even like ''Joseph''. It might be boring for them, and unless your little kid is mature for their age,the probably won't understand some parts of it. Thanks for reading my review. Once you see this show, you'll surely be saying ''Go,go,go Joseph!''

    Go Jo!

I really enjoy ''Joseph''. It is colorful, fun, and energized. I watch it about every other day, I love it so much. ''Joseph'' is an excellent show, and it should not be missed. It is very entertaining, what with its costumes, sets, and above all, musical numbers. The songs in it are wonderful. I really love the songs! ''Joseph'' is an amazing, cheering, and highly musical show. It is just great! (please note that I found most of the kids in it quite annoying at times- they were trying to act so cute. Their cuteness looks fake. However, they do make a nice choir.)

    Opie Cunningham

We are a family of five with children ranging in age from 3 to 12. After we first saw the PBS special a few years back, we had to purchase the tape. The performance is phenominal, Donny Osmond reinvented himself and will always be Joespoh and not the little boy from The Osmonds. The rest of the cast was also incredible and the Rice/Webber script is very clever and witty. It brought to life one of the greatest stories from the bible and made it as enterainable as any of todays current movie. Oh, by the way, we have watched the tape so many times, it is worn out and we are going to purchase a new one. If you have never seen the play, GO! If you want to see its premiere performance, buy this tape.

    Excellent movie, great cast

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is such a great movie! Our whole family has enjoyed it (although the part with Potiphar's wife is somewhat mature for kids) I really can't get over how perfect Donny Osmond was in the role of Joseph. ''Close Every Door'' is my favorite song/scene, and I often return to that scene more than once when watching just to watch it again (ok, so it's not always just to hear the song....) I had bought a different version of the cd (the one with Michael Damian as Joe)and it's good, but am thinking about getting the one with Donny. It's too bad they didn't have Maria Friedman on the CD, she has an incredible voice. I think I could watch it many times and always find something new to like about it.

Wonderful--- Why do the Star-Ratings stop at five?!?

About a year ago, I was shopping for a fresh new musical for my high school. We'd run the usual Greese and Secret Garden into the ground. I picked up the Joseph DVD and as soon as we stuck it in, we knew this was the one! I'd reviewed the other versions after that ( i.e. Donovan's) and they weren't up to par--- Even the DVD was more colorful!!! (Which is the point, after all!) A Wonderful Script, and Wonderful Cast and Brilliant Scenery (DVD)--- ''...ahead of our time!''

    TERRIFIC !!!

The Webber/Rice team is AWESOME! Donny Osmond is terrific and I wish I could find more from Maria Friedman, she really brought the whole film together as the Narrator yet I don't see any more shows featuring her. An incredible journey I have enjoyed many times!! Time to buy the DVD so it lasts forever!!

A great movie for kids to watch too!

I had to babysit two kids from the church I go to, and we all agreed to watch a movie. They picked this movie, and at first I thought it wasn't going to be good. But it was great! I loved it!

    Great Movie!1

This movie is really great! Donny Osmond as Joseph is as great as when he did the Broadway play. He really brought me into the movie and made me believe in what was happening with his character. One scene is a little mature, but it doesn't offend anyone or thing. I bought this video as a birthday gift for me on impulse because I kept seeing it in video stores and I just had to have it. As soon as I saw it, I kept watching it. It's a great video!!

An Andrew L. W. release of color and music worth buying.

I first caught this on PBS sometime back and kept waiting for it to air again. Then after seeing the commercials on tv for its availability, I had to get it. It is one of those videos you can watch over and over. I have a five-year old who sings the numbers all the time. The music is real catchy. It moves along very well from scene to scene. The theme is well done too. Integrating the actors portayed as school faculty. There are a couple of scenes which may seem suggestive in maturity, but nothing really to offend, in my opinion. To me, this is totally different from Cats, which I've actually scene twice, when they were on tour in the past. Joseph is more of a modern mosaic painting, if that makes sense. It's a story that is told well and very good visually. Worth buying in my opinion. ''Both were servants of Pharaoh the King. Thrown in the dog house for doing their thing.'' -The Narrator (This is truly funny when you realize what it's referring to)
