In the second volume, The Message of Myth, the idea of the "creation myth" is compared in its myriad forms throughout the world and history. Volume three, The First Storytellers, features Campbell's seemingly inexhaustible knowledge of anthropologically unique rites of passage and the role of the shaman in various cultures. Love and the Goddess explores the enduring concepts of woman as goddess, the significance of the virgin, as well as artistic eroticism from Indian culture, William Blake, and Thomas Mann. The fifth volume, Sacrifice and Bliss, features Campbell detailing the geography of Earth's sacred places as well as the meaning of bliss and what it means to bring this sensation into the life of the individual. In the final tape, Masks of Eternity, Moyers and Campbell discuss the use of images of gods in myth and religion as a metaphor for the veil that shields the mind from the eternal.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
Renowned teacher and storyteller Joseph Campbell joins Bill Moyers in this acclaimed series exploring the meaning myths have in our daily lives. Each of the six episodes --"The Hero's Adventure," "The Message of the Myth," "The First Storytellers," "Sacrifice and Bliss," "Love and the Goddess," and "Masks of Eternity" -- focuses on a character or theme found in mythologies of various cultures and religions. In his lively discussions with Moyers, Campell argues eloquently that these timeless archetypes continue to exert a powerful pull on our unconscious.

    That Which is Beyond Words

I approached the Power of Myth series as I try to approach any piece of new information; with open ears and a closed mouth. Cambell has articulated more clearly than anyone I have ever spoken to about any thing to do with religion the true essence of what it is to be alive. As someone who belongs to no formal religious organization, my biases towards the dangers of the misinturpretation of religious doctrine are strong. However, I have never been able to make any kind of a causal claim as to why I feel this way. Cambell's work, however, has answered that 'why' for me on an intrinsic level that I find extremely difficult to put into words. I FEEL what he says makes sense, I don't know how else to explain it. A highly recommened series for anyone interested in living.

...When You Are Ready a Teacher Appears...

I got acquainted with Joseph Campbell's work thirteen years ago when I stumbled upon one of the interviews he had with Bill Moyers. Since that time, I have read his books and Practically wore out a set of the VHS cassetes of the interviews. I noticed a most curious phenomenon when I watched the videos or read the companion book for the series. It seemed that new information was there every time I read the book; or I would hear something new from an interview. This revelation was not due to the book or video changing, but it was I who was improving. It was like the ''Slow Burn'', he mentioned in one of the interviews where change occurs. I hope everyone can find that experience when they patiently and curiously watch the interviews
