Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
Renowned teacher and storyteller Joseph Campbell joins Bill Moyers in this acclaimed series exploring the meaning myths have in our daily lives. Each of the six episodes --"The Hero's Adventure," "The Message of the Myth," "The First Storytellers," "Sacrifice and Bliss," "Love and the Goddess," and "Masks of Eternity" -- focuses on a character or theme found in mythologies of various cultures and religions. In his lively discussions with Moyers, Campell argues eloquently that these timeless archetypes continue to exert a powerful pull on our unconscious.

Joseph has a fantastic way of sharing what he has learned over many years about Myth..

Highly recommended for anyone who has an interest in Myths..how they came to be, their purpose and how they are of use and influence in the modern world.. He makes the connections of the past with today in an understandable way... I love his material and his presentations.

Powerful, inspiring, significant, ...all in (1) package

This 6 Part Series made for PBS has changed my life forever. The knowledge that Joseph Campbell brings to this discussion is immeasurable. His pure passion, pleasure, and readiness to recapitulate his love for and then to willfully share his knowledge of the subjects in question …is over the top!!! Mr. Campbell brilliantly manifest’s an answer or at least ponders a possible theory for each and every question Bill Moyers decisively bombards him about. All I could do was watch and learn. The pleasurable part was that nothing was implied… it was discussed. Amazing!!! Bravo!!!

The Amazing Joseph Campbell really delivers

This DVD set has been one of the smartest purchases I have ever made, in fact, I have now given away both my gift copy and my personal one so I have to order a few more. The wealth of Joseph Campbell's knowledge, compassion and zeal for life is so motivational and inspiring. I was fortunate enough to meet him in my early 20's so this audio visual presentation of his theories and philosophies is very dear to my heart. The idea of myth being an integral part of our daily lives and a link for all humanity gives me great comfort in this crazy world!

    Recommended for Expanding the Mind

Joseph Campbell was a unique and gifted man. He has contributed many useful and insightful teachings to our culture. Although his work can be dry and highly dense to the initiate, as I once was, in time, with repeated viewing I was given the opportunity to grow, learn, and understand the world as it is, with its beauties as well as its horrors, so as to more thoroughly engage in the human experience. It takes time to become the person we all wish we could be. And, for me at least, this series has helped me realize things about myself that I would not otherwise have learned and been exposed to.

A spiritual translation for the world of religion

Like a favorite song, you'll watch it over and over, gleaning something from it you hadn't found before. Each 'epiphany' will reveal new ways to understand everything you thought you new about religion and your spiritual existance. We live in a world much larger than what's been revealed to us through our own 'myths' and 'rituals'. This goes in depth in how to understand and assimilate that fact.

    Very boring, very dry.

I was expecting more of a documentary that would be interesting and entertaining. This was deffinetly not what I was expecting.

Wonderful insights into life and the interconnectedness of humanity!

Joseph Campbell was one of the giants in the field of mythology, amassing a formidable amount of facts from all over the world. The enthusiasm with which he addresses every facet of this, his lifelong work is compelling...a joy to behold. A master of storytelling, Campbell brings life to the myths, while quietly making sure that the moral to the story is not lost. Christian, Jew, Moslem, Hindu, Pagan...are all addressed in this impactful series, the underlying themes and threads that connect us all are held up to the light, so that seeing, we may begin to understand not only ourselves, not only others...but the very essence of what life is about. These lessons ought to be in the hands of every child...and every adult.

The Power of the Power of Myth

I watched this amazing interview when it first aired and am still held in awe by its scope. A dynamic and captivating interview that speaks volumes. THE definitive guide to myth intellegently discussed in an easy-to-grasp form. A must-see for anyone who has ever looked at the stars and looked at themselves and wondered about our place on this world.

    ''Blissfully'' Enlightening

Joseph Campbell was revolutionary once and still today, can open a new consciousness for many. He discovered and followed his ''bliss'' and in so doing, gave others the tools and desire to search for their own meanings in myths and a challenge to create new myths that can speak to us today.
