Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Richard Gilliam
Journey to the Center of the Earth is a grand adventure story with charismatic performances, imaginative production design, and a superb Bernard Herrmann score that enhances the film's sense of wonder. The high point in veteran director Henry Levin's career, Journey wisely veers away from the procedural nature of the Jules Verne source novel, adding a central conflict and more diverse character development. The film is held together by James Mason's rousing performance, compensating for the stiffer efforts of Arlene Dahl and Pat Boone. Of particular note are the set designs and special effects, which create a convincing underground world into which the film's heroes venture. Carl Faulkner's sound engineering is also a substantial asset, outpacing many of the visual effects in realism.

    One of my favorite classics

I love the story telling and characters in this story. The book was excellent and the video is played at my house often enough that we'll probably need to buy another DVD! This is one of my favorite SF classics.

    A Classic Masterpiece

I bought this dvd because I had seen this film as a kid and remembered it over the years. In that regard it has been unforgettable. For the time it was for me another Wizard of Oz. Though special effects have long surpassed those in the film, the story and plot still holds firm. The cast was wonderful and even Pat Boone seemed to fit in. This is still the best version of the film made even though there seems to have been thousands. The effects may not hold the younger audience, but then again they always seem to surprise me by what they like. I would recommend this to all ages.

    J2CE 2DVD

This movie was worthy of going to DVD in 1959 right after its release. A Cinematic Gem, then and now! The story, the actors and the setting and time worked so well together that makes any ''remakes'' impossible
