Overview

Ju-on, one of the most critically hailed Japanese horror films and the basis for The Grudge, gets this surprisingly deluxe, high-quality stateside DVD release from Lions Gate Home Entertainment. The feature, presented in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio, offers glorious picture quality, rich darks, and vivid colors. Further sucking viewers into the film's frightening world are superb audio tracks presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 for the Japanese-dialogue version and 2.0 for the English-dubbed version. For those not wanting to hear the poorly dubbed English, both English and Spanish subtitles are available. A standout attraction on the disc is the audio commentary by director Sam Raimi and his friend, director Scott Spiegel. Raimi, who also helped bring the remake to American audiences, admits early on that not only is it his second time watching the film, but he feels as if the film is teaching him how to properly make a horror film. The fact that both Raimi and Spiegel are still scared by many of Ju-on's freakiest moments makes listening to this hilarious and intelligent audio commentary a real treat for fans. From there, the DVD offers up a treasure chest of extras like several interviews with the cast, behind-the-scenes footage, and an insightful interview with the film's gifted writer and director, Takashi Shimizu. Shimizu discusses the long history of the Ju-on film series, the distinct style of Japanese horror films, and scary haunted houses in depth. The interview is thankfully subtitled in English. A group of not-to-be-missed deleted scenes with Shimizu commentary and an American-made trailer for the film round out this first-rate DVD release.

    Remake of a Remake

Same plot, just remade from the direct to video ones of the same name with the same basic story but just changing a view things, the remake of the remake of the remake was also good too so either way these films are scary with comparison to the ring but just a little confusing and hard to understand at times is all.

If you've seen "The Ring": you've seen this

This isn't a BAD, bad movie, but it's not great. From the initial promising shots (the blood on the futon is very well done) it degenerates into another version of "Ringu" (long hair covering the face: eyes in photgraphs all blurry etc.) and when the zombie schoolgirls turn up, you'll get this horrible feeling you've seen this one before somewhere. Also, you get no real sense of motive. Lots of weird things happen, but just WHY they happen is never really explained. The horror effect is therefore more like a carnival ride than a series of horrifying secrets being slowly revealed leading to a thrilling finish. The movie ends up appearing to be all denouement. For example: the boy turns into a cat... but why for crying out loud?? You'll never know! There is also never any sense that those being scared ever want to fight back. It's like one of those "Lifetime Channel" movies where everyone's a victim: I kept shouting 'Grab a baseball bat and get wacking". Basically very silly, not very original and not very plausible, either.

    'misleading' review

um, okay...there were two direct-to-video ju-on films (aka ju-on THE CURSE 1 and 2) in 2000 which were remade in 2003-2004 and these theatrical releases became know as Ju-On THE GRUDGE 1 and 2. this here is the first theatrical movie. when lionsgate released this film in a few indie theatres in america this year, posters did in fact bill it as 'ju-on the grudge' however perhaps due to copyright issues (?) this region 1 release is simply called ju-on.
