Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Matthew Tobey
Exploring the fear of crime-ridden urban underbellies that lives in the hearts of suburban Anglo-Americans, while at the same time playing on those same fears in the hearts of its audience, Judgment Night is an interesting film if not a completely successful one. From the outset, the premise of four middle-class guys finding themselves suddenly and unwittingly wrapped up in a gritty gangland murder is promising and intriguing. The tension created is strong and there's a genuine urge to know what will happen next on the part of the audience. Unfortunately, the script progressively falls into more and more clichés as the plot unfolds and, by the climax, becomes somewhat predictable. While Denis Leary is more than effective as the menacing villain and Cuba Gooding Jr. and Jeremy Piven are adequate, Emilio Estevez and Stephen Dorff just aren't strong enough to carry the film when the writing fails. Judgment Night is flawed, but any curious and open-minded filmgoer should be able to find a handful of redeeming qualities. At the very least, the soundtrack, which features rap-rock collaborations like Teenage Fanclub with De La Soul and Pearl Jam with Cypress Hill, is worth hearing.
