Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
This keenly written, engrossing drama takes off on the strength of Kevin Spacey’s dazzling performance -- a real tour de force, and easily his best since American Beauty. K-PAX starts off by asking a deceptively simple question: What would become of a man who claimed to be an extraterrestrial visiting Earth in human form? He’d be institutionalized -- exactly the fate that befalls a mild-mannered, seemingly average fellow who calls himself "Prot"Spacey. His fanciful story impresses staff psychiatrist Mark Powell Jeff Bridges, a driven but compassionate professional convinced that he can help restore this particular patient's sanity. Under the direction of Iain Softley Wings of the Dove, K-PAX vacillates from low comedy to high drama, and even takes on the aspect of a police procedural when Powell undertakes an investigation of Prot’s past in an attempt to determine his true identity. The shifts in narrative direction and tone are achieved seamlessly, thanks in no small part to Softley’s splendid cast, which also includes Mary McCormack as Powell’s understanding wife, Alfre Woodard as the institution’s no-nonsense administrator, and David Patrick Kelly as a fellow patient who takes a shine to Prot. For the most part, though K-Pax revolves around Spacey and Bridges, and for their interplay alone it definitely warrants repeated screenings. The DVD features an alternate ending shot by Softley, who also contributes a feature-length commentary. Behind-the-scenes footage and cast and crew interviews enliven a "making of" documentary, and there’s also a gallery of still photographs taken on the set by Bridges.
Los Angeles Times
If K-PAX's conclusion is a bit too glib, too pat for what it's trying to do, it's an honorable attempt to create a thoughtful entertainment, and it's got the kind of acting worth visiting from another planet to experience. Kenneth Turan

    Thought Provoking!

This movie was a slight bit different than I had been expecting, but in a good way. It was also even better than I was expecting. Yes, this movie has been out for a while, but I just barely saw it for the first time last night, so I decided I would write a review. There are a lot of reviews I could write on older movies in general, but I tend to stick to movies that I see recently, or I'd be writing a ton of reviews. What's further more is that I love Kevin Spacey, so I have beaten myself over the fact that I hadn't previously seen this. I figured it was about time. This movie is intelligent, deep, inspiring, and thought provoking...and all of the actors did a wonderful job in it. This film is more drama than sci fi, but yes...it definitely revolves around a sci fi thing. If you like sci fi and drama, than definitely do check this one out. If nothing else, watch it for the performances. The cast is great! Since Kevin Spacey is in this and is one of my favorite actors, though I haven't seen all of his movies yet, I have listed below my absolute favorites of his that I have seen thus far. Check them out.

    Intelligent and Beautiful

This one will get you thinking. The performances are incredible, the chemistry between Bridges and Spacey palpable, and the compassion in the story will break your heart. Truly a beautiful film, one I think everyone should see at least once.

    A truly heartbreaking film

Kevin Spacey turns in a bravura performance in this film. Jeff Bridges does a fantastic job as Dr. Powell who is trying to find out who Prot (Spacey) is. I don't want to give anything away, but once Dr Powell learns the truth, you cannot help but be amazed at the power of the mind and how heartbreak can influence it. Definitely worth seeing more than once or owning as well

    Truly Extordinary!

K-pax,directed by Iain Softley and starring Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges, give one of the the best duo acting perfomances i have ever seen! Spacey is brilliant as Prot, a mental patient who claims to be from another world, hence K-pax, and his claims are anough to rouse the interest of the head pyschatyrist,(Jeff bridges). At first skeptical of his claims, Bridges suspicsion wavers after learning of some the abilities that Prot has, such as being able to see ultra-violet light. A thoughtfull, engrossing, and wonderfully realized film, it will challange the way the you view the world , asking the question "how much proof is needed to believe somthing we don't understand?"

    Wonderful

This movie is one of those movies that has you thinking and guessing even after the credits are rolling. Wonderful performances and screenwriting. Kevin Spacey, especially, gives a phenominal performance with great facial expressions and body language. One of the few movies that walks the thin line between sci-fi and psychological drama.

    Complicated with a great story.

I just finnished watching this movie and its one of those movies where you know people are going to react ''What a stupid move!'' Well the only reason anyone would act like this to a movie is because their a religous freak, or most likely they just dont understand it. I though the ending of the movie was one of the best scenes in a movie I have ever seen. I dont really pay attention to acting as much as story line, and this story line was what i thought very intresting. Not only did it have one of the best ideas of any movie but the songs were also great from a corosponding point of view. Indeed i loved this movie so much i think im gonna go watch it again, did i mention its 10:50 and i have school tommarow?

Solid story, better acting, and a song bonus

I missed ''K-PAX'' in the theaters, and only saw it after DVD release -- and I'm glad. The story as presented faithfully and credibly walks the line between ''Is he crazy?'' and ''He can't be crazy, because look what he knows!'' However, having watched the disc's ''Deleted Scenes'' makes me think a slightly different cut would have increased the sense of wonder that was present, though not intense, at movie's end. Spacey's performance is remarkable at points -- his subtle facial expressions, particularly at the end, are wonderful -- and Bridges is his usual watchable lead. Good after-the-kids-have-gone-to-bed fare. Also, for you music fans, note that the end credits have a complete (five-minute) version of Sheryl Crow's ''Safe and Sound'' that is unavailable on the soundtrack disc, and is also a different mix from versions of the song on both the ''Tribute To Heroes'' disc from last fall and Sheryl's ''C'Mon, C'mon'' project due out in April 2002.
