Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Tom Wiener
Despite its come-on title, Mira Nair's film is a serious study of sexual politics -- not that there isn't a more than a little sex in it, though. The film marked Nair's return to her native India after the mixed successes of her two Hollywood features, Mississippi Masala and The Perez Family. Indira Varma's Maya is a resourceful woman who understands that her options in life are limited by both her social station as a servant belonging to a lower caste and by her gender. Since there is nothing she can do about the former condition, she uses her powers as a woman schooled and skilled in the art of lovemaking to gain respect. Nair makes Maya totally sympathetic by contrasting her with her childhood friend Tara, for whom life has been far too easy, simply because she was born into royalty. Sex becomes a tool for Maya, and though the film's scenes of lovemaking are generally erotic, we're also aware that Maya is thinking beyond the pleasure principle to what it can gain her.

I am a hindu and this film is no different from any other film that exploits a woman's sexuality.

I had watched this film when I was 16 years old and watched it again when I was much older, my opinion has not changed. I can understand why a lot of people- both men and women from the western culture appreciate this film. In the western world, a woman's sexuality is either being exploited due to men's need of simulation or is repressed because it's power is far more complex than the power of a man's hand. However, in both the western and hindu world, a woman's sexuality are being taught to stimulate men with their sexuality. The western world would appreciates this film merely because a women's sexuality is being more artfully done and she is not only half naked and dancing around a pole. No, this movie is not porn but if it was, it would be like any free porn that is available for men. This film merely shows it is ok for a woman to enjoy her sexuality as they all should but women in this film shows it on a more highly erotic way than americans had understand it themselves.

    A reviewer

Fantastic film! Set in the 16th century Moghul empire, it tells the story of rivals Tara, a lovely Mughal princess, and Maya, her handmaid. Seeing that Maya's beauty and grace surpass her own, Tara is insanely jealous, but smug in her knowledge that her station in life will lead to marrying the handsome king. Maya, made resentful by the petty mistreatment of childhood friend Tara, uses her charms to elevate her status, ultimately becoming courtesan to the king. The story is enthralling, exploring the dynamics of friendship, the power struggle between the sexes, female rivalry, true love, and yes, sex itself. The sexual content, however, is sensitively dealt with and essential to the story. Everything about this film - the setting, the costumes, the actors - is just gorgeous! Highly recommended for fans of historical fiction.

    Great movie don't miss it

No, this is not a porn movie. Its a great movie about two young girls growing up together in 16 th century India. Problems arise when Mya, the servant girl, is much better at her Kama Sutra training, the ways of love and seduction and enticement, than her best friend, the Princess. More problems occur when Mya is seduced by the Princess's fiance, A King from nearby province. For this action, Mya is blamed and thrown out of the palace, the only home she has ever known. The imagery is great and so is the lush and haunting Indian music. I''d love the soundtrack to this movie. Question, why is it that Western cultures are so hung up on sex as something nasty and smutty, while people like the Hindus don't have this problem? Think about it while you watch this lush and sensual movie.
