This is one of the more off-beat entries into the Frankenstein sub-genre, in that it features the original Creature, Boris Karloff who really hams it up playing the disfigured grandson of the famed mad baron in a style that combines gothic horror with the awe and fear created by the newly dawned atomic age. This is one of the more off-beat entries into the Frankenstein sub-genre, in that it features the original Creature, Boris Karloff who really hams it up playing the disfigured grandson of the famed mad baron in a style that combines gothic horror with the awe and fear created by the newly dawned atomic age. The story begins in the title year and finds Victor the III living in the ancestral castle and strapped for the cash he needs to resurrect his grandfather's experiments. He needs a fortune because this time he wants to use atomic power to bring the monster to life. To scare up the needed cash, he lets a television crew come to his famous digs to shoot a show. He ends up getting a lot more than money from the cast and crew and eventually he succeeds in creating a brand-new Creature. Unfortunately, the monster proves to be as volatile as his predecessors, and tragedy for both master and creature ensues.

    I Also Recommend:

Karloff comes off better (no surprise there)!

Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi are, deservedly, renowned as perhaps the best actors in horror movies. But most of their "greatest hits", so to speak, have already been released on DVD; only one of the four movies in this 2-disc set is actually above mediocrity. That movie, THE WALKING DEAD, stars Karloff and is directed by an A-Lister, Michael Curtiz. And that movie is a three-star picture at best. The other Karloff-starrer in the collection, FRANKENSTEIN 1970, is pretty bad stuff, and Karloff gives a rare bad performance in it. It was pretty obvious throughout the movie that he would've preferred to be somewhere else...anywhere else than in this movie. And, despite the subtitle of the collection, HORROR CLASSICS, neither of the Lugosi-starrers are horror movies. YOU'LL FIND OUT is a big-band comedy (with some rather nifty music), and ZOMBIES ON BROADWAY is a very low-budget comedy, which just happens to have Bela Lugosi in it. Now, if you're a Karloff/Lugosi completist, you've probably already bought this collection, and you'll appreciate it for their presences in your permanent collection. However, if you're a casual horror fan, there's not much here for you.
