If chivalry isn't dead, it's certainly in need of resuscitation -- which is exactly what it gets in this cheerfully preposterous romantic comedy starring preternaturally perky Meg Ryan and rising star Hugh Jackman. She plays Kate, a brusque, cynical market-research professional dedicated to making unpalatable products appealing to consumers. He plays Leopold, the third Duke of Albany, a 19th-century English lord who designed the Brooklyn Bridge and invented the elevator. Their paths cross when Kate's eccentric inventor friend Liev Schreiber discovers an opening in the matrix of time, goes back to 1876, and returns to 21st-century New York City with a befuddled Leopold -- his great-great-grandfather -- in tow. Director James Mangold Girl, Interrupted milks the predictable fish-out-of-water gags for all they're worth, but Leopold's dislocation isn't the movie's focal point; his budding romance with Kate, who's initially nonplused by his courtly manner, gradually assumes narrative prominence. Mangold clearly laments the diminution of courtesy in our fast-paced, increasingly urbanized society, but that's not a message he pushes too forcefully. This is, after all, a comedy, and one that is perceptive, witty, and often dreamy. Kate & Leopold benefits enormously from the pitch-perfect performances of the two very personable stars, and is sure to find an ever-increasing audience on DVD. The disc affords two different versions of the film: the one released theatrically and Mangold's original cut. A fun, quirky romantic comedy-fantasy that is never entirely convincing in its romance, but finds hilarious purchase in the form of Hugh Jackman, who marvelously inhabits the script's best-written fish-out-of-water scenes. Jackman is superb as a 19th century nobleman encountering such modern abominations as pooper scooper laws and false advertising, but the passion that should be at the story's heart falls woefully flat. Mostly that's because the filmmakers have blown a prime opportunity for richer storytelling by calling upon Meg Ryan to deliver nothing more than another solid, if by now predictable, variation on her "klutzy modern gal pining for real romance" routine. How much better a film might have resulted if Ryan, a capable actress who has done underrated and complex work in such films as Restoration (1995) and Courage Under Fire (1996), had been required to play someone less familiar? What's so fascinating about the fictional concept of time travel is the contrast it provides between contemporary life and that of another era. In Leopold's relationship with the modern world, the film has a lot to say about what we've sacrificed at the altar of profit and career, but in his relationship with Kate, Kate and Leopold (2001) becomes about nothing more than packaging and marketing a product, sadly proving its own point.

    Very Charming Movie!

    I love romantic comedies and I really enjoyed watching Kate and Leopold. Don't take the logistics of the time travel theme so seriously, it is just a cute, sweet and charming romantic comedy with fantasy elements so just sit back and forget about reality and just enjoy! The whole cast is excellent, Meg Ryan and Hugh Jackman are both wonderful and have great chemistry and the supporting cast is also very good, especially Breckin Meyer, Liev Schreiber and Bradley Witford.

    Remember true love? Well, it's real!!!

    There was a time when you probably stopped believing in true love and now you view all romantic movies as garbage that will never happen. This movie will bring back that belief in true love. Meg Ryan was great as Kate and Hugh Jackman was so real as Leopold that if they had cast anyone else, it wouldn't be as good. The cast is great, the plot is great, and the acting is great. This is one of the best movies ever made!

    OLD FASHIONED LOVE STORY

    AS ALWAYS MEG RYAN SHINES. NO SURPRISE THERE. HUGH JACKMAN MADE LEOPOLD SEEM SO REAL. BUT THE PERFORMANCE THAT PUSHED THIS FILM TO THE OUTSTANDING MARK WAS LIEV SCHREIBER'S ARTFUL ADDITION WITH HIS HUMOROUS TURN AS STUART. THE SUPPORTING CAST WAS ALSO PERFECTLY PLACED, ALL ADDING JUST THE RIGHT TOUCHES TO BRING IT ALL TOGETHER.

    Not as Lame as the Other Meg Ryan Films

    Are you sick of Meg Ryan in ''You've Got Mail,'' ''Sleepless in Seattle,'' or ''When Harry Met Sally'': all pretty much the same exact movie - and the same cast? Well here comes another one, but in my opinion, it's the best of the bunch. My boyfriend hates Meg Ryan and we both hate cheesy 'romantic comedies'; even he actually sat through, and (dare I say?) almost enjoyed the film. We couldn't really figure out the logistics of the time transport 'glitch' towards the end of the film, but I guess it's one of those things that we're just supposed to 'accept'. Only worth it since I bought it on sale, but still pleased it's part of my DVD collection.

    Kate & Leopold: My Point of View

    I loved this movie.It was romantic yet funny.I'm a sucker for romantic movies and I love a good laugh.This movie has the best qualities of a movie.

    Excellent movie!

    A man, discovering a portal thru time, visits the 1800's and accidentally brings back a Duke with him. The Duke falls in love while his host is detained. This is a delightful movie. I love Meg Ryan in anything and I was very excited to see Hugh Jackman again (I loved him in 'Someone Like You.') Meg played her part of the ad woman with a slight attitude to perfection and Hugh played his part as the quintessential gentleman with warmth and believablity. She is always a pleasure and Hugh Jackman is always sexy and intense. The plot was just a little thin, but the whole cast was wonderful and more than made up for any flaws in the storyline. A most delightful movie!!!!

    Bring Back 1876!

    ¿You can¿t live a fairy tale.¿ Meg Ryan as Kate¿Oh but I beg to differ, see this movie! Hugh Jackman is the Duke of Dashing charming, educated and witty. His portrayal of the lost in time noble brings across a genuine naivety that is both provocative and alluring. Meg Ryan is the quirky businesswoman driven to get ahead but blinded by that ambition to the advances of her superior. Enter Leopold to save the day!

    Perfect Movie for everyone!

    This movie was a perfect blend of everything you go to the movies for: romance, comedy and suspense. The actors have wonderful chemistry and it is fully worth watching!

    Hugh Jackman yes, Meg Ryan.......?

    Definately a movie which shows how wonderful of an actor Hugh Jackman is - if he could live through hogwash like 'Swordfish' than he can get through this - banal script and definately the death boom for Meg Ryan...looking so thin and the rat gnawed hairstyle must go - her acting is even worse than her looks...Breckin Meyer comes through strong, Liev Schrieber shockingly does as well....buy on sale for the extras. See time travel romance done better in selection below.

    Mag dazzles.....again!

    Meg Ryan playes Kate (really?!?!)and Hugh Jackman is Leopold. Leopold accidently goes from the 1800's to today by way of a time machine. He falls in love with pretty, or may I say, sexy, Kate (that mans you Meg!). The movie is classic-style, in the tradition of ''An Afair to Remember''. But, really, I only went to see it because of Meg! You go girl! Watch out Julia, Meg is the queen of romantic-comedies.

    Awesome Movie of the year

    How can a movie go wrong with a gentleman like Leopold? James Mangold did a superb job in displaying a tangible love caught out of time. Meg Ryan is fresh and likable and Hugh Jackman is superb in the display of his acting skill. I saw it too many times to admit and liked it better each time. A very fun movie.
