Kelly's Heroes

Overview

Like M*A*S*H and Catch-22, both released the same year, this military comedy takes place in an earlier war but is really a thinly disguised treatise on the modern-day insanity and avariciousness then unfolding in Vietnam. Clint Eastwood stars as Kelly, a former lieutenant whose illusions about the glory of war, if he has any, are lost when he is busted in rank for following some poorly considered orders in World War II France. After capturing a friendly German officer, Kelly learns the whereabouts of millions of ...

After capturing a friendly German officer, Kelly learns the whereabouts of millions of dollars in gold bars, earmarked to finance a military payroll. Taking advantage of a three-day liberty, Kelly assembles a motley trio of fellow soldiers to help him sneak behind enemy lines and retrieve the booty. They include Big Joe Telly Savalas, a gruff sergeant; Crapgame Don Rickles, a supply sergeant already enriching himself as a black marketer and con man; and the hippie-like tank commander Oddball Donald Sutherland. Since crossing into enemy-held territory means heading in the opposite direction of the retreating Allies, Kelly and his men encounter armed resistance. Receiving word of their campaign, the vain General Colt Carroll O'Connor mistakes the quartet of freelancing scam artists for all-American heroes.

    Uncle Sam Wanted These Men?

Perhaps one of the most amazing films dealing with WWII, Kelly's Heros manages to some how make a sad time in the history of man seem hilarious. While no one in Hollywood would touch the subject of Vietnam straightforward on film (with the exception of John Wayne's misguided ''The Green Berets''), Kelly's Heros obviously spoofs the war. Sutherland's portrayal of a ''way out'' tank commander is perhaps the best of his career. In contrast to the earlier films about WWII showing a self-sacrificing solidarity, Kelly's Heros embodies the spirit of the 60's ''me'' generation. Everyone is out for their share of the gold, and don't want to wait for anybody. Check out the scene where Sutherland's Oddball introduces Eastwood's Kelly to his tank. It's worth watching twice.

WW2 Will Never Be The Same!!!

Clint Eastwood and director Brian G. Hutton reteam(they first worked together in Where Eagles Dare) for this zany WW2 Caper movie. Along for the ride with Clint are Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland, Don Rickles, Carroll O'Connor, Gavin MacLeod, and Stuart Margolin. The plot? Kelly (Eastwood) convinces a group of soldiers to use their 3-day pass to sneak several miles behind enemy lines in order to steal 16 million in German bullion for themselves. Enroute they experience all manner of adventures before the grand finale, which features fine action sequences and a hilarious spoof of Clint's Spaghetti Westerns. Hutton again does a masterful job of directing in this serio-comic film. The cast works well together, although if I have one complaint, it's Sutherland's hippie tank commander: he's an obvious anachronism who doesn't quite fit in.
