Barnes & Noble - Charles Salzberg
In 1846, a young reporter for the Brooklyn Eagle named Walt Whitman wrote: "The game of ball is glorious." Whitman might have been among the first to recognize the baseball's intoxicating allure, but he certainly wasn't the last. Following his highly praised PBS-TV series "The Civil War," documentary director/producer/writer Ken Burns gave us "Baseball," a stunning 18-hour programming achievement -- (collected here on nine video tapes), chronicling the history of America's pastime from the mid-19th century through the end of the 20th. Using a vast array of fascinating still photographs and priceless archival film, capturing many of the game's most historic moments, Burns created an entertaining, riveting film, encompassing not only a history of a sport but of America itself. Burns seamlessly weaves his images with masterful narration by the late TV news anchorman John Chancellor; renowned fans such as Billy Crystal, Doris Kearns Goodwin, and Bob Costas; and the voices of, among others, Julie Harris, Ossie Davis, and Arthur Miller. Haunting renditions of the National Anthem and "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" sustain a mood that's both wistful and stirring. Burns has created a glorious paean to our summer's game.

This is absolutely a must if you are a Baseball fan. It measures our history and passage of time through Baseball. It ties together generations and truly proves beyond any doubt that Baseball is the American Pastime. Through the years it has been the most popular sport. None of the other sports save Golf have the rich history of Baseball. For those who love Baseball and can't get to Cooperstown and the Hall of Fame, this series of DVD's has it all. It is something I will watch over and over.

This is the best documentary of Baseball as I know it. If you are a true baseball fan, and not some type of a front runner, then this collection is for you.

I first saw this film as a student at the Jim Evans Academy of Professional Umpiring. It was shown as an optional distraction during our lunch hour and I quickly became hooked on it. The film footage and photographs are amazing and only topped by the commentary and insight offered by several guest speakers/former players. It is the most complete anthology of the game I have ever seen, from its inception, through the dead ball era, the color barrier, and the infamous reserve clause. I learned as much about baseball and how we arrived at its current version, as I did from my month of professional umpiring instruction. This collection is a must for any true student of the game, umpire or former player alike.

I was disappointed with Ken Burns' series on baseball. I liked many aspects of it -- the early parts, the history, the usual Ken Burns techniques, and especially how much emphasis he put on the race problems in baseball and how he did not ignore the Negro leagues. But unfortunately the series really really misses out by an East coast bias that Burns apparently has. Apparently he doesn't think any decent players played outside of New York or Boston, or did not have a Yankees or Red Sox uniform on. There is scarcely a mention of a Cardinals player, a Cubs player, anyone west of New York! Musial? Aaron? They were scarcely given the attention they deserved. Give me a break!
