Overview

Fans learn the truth about Kermit the Frog and his younger days in Kermit's Swamp Years. The film is presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen as well as a 1.33:1 full-frame version. Both of these transfers appear to be in tip-top shape, especially the widescreen print. With sharp colors and dark black levels, fans of the green one will be very happy with how these pictures look. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.0 Surround in French, Portuguese, English, and Spanish. This is a decent 5.0 mix that includes some directional effects filtered through both the front and back speakers. While this 5.0 mix won't give home theater systems a really thorough workout, it does support the film very well. Also included on this disc are English, Chinese, Thai, and Korean subtitles. Kermit's Swamp Years sports some entertaining extras, starting with a video interview with Kermit featuring the lovable reptile answering questions about his past. A screen-specific commentary track with Kermit and Horace the Horsefly is a hoot with recollections about the production (and each of them being quite silly). A behind-the-scenes featurette includes footage from the production along with funny asides by the actors (aka Muppets) in the film. Finally there's a humorous blooper reel and a boatload of trailers for other Columbia family DVDs.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Carrying on the proud Jim Henson tradition of family entertainment that doesn't make parents want to croak, Kermit the Frog makes a welcome return to the screen in this produced-for-video feature. The plucky, good-natured amphibian recalls "the biggest adventure of our lives" when the then-12-year-old tadpole and his friends Goggles and Croaker yearned to venture beyond the swamp and "show the world how big and brave we were." He gets his chance when he sets out to rescue Goggles and a bullfrog bully named Blotch from a pet store. Along the way he foils a frog-hating science teacher seeking reptilian subjects for his class to dissect. One misses the celebrity cameos that so enlivened The Muppet Movie, and, of course, Miss Piggy, but the new characters are right at home in the Muppet universe. The soundtrack includes a reprise of "The Rainbow Connection." Be sure to keep the show running for Muppet bloopers.
