Overview

Sex and the City seductress Kim Cattrall offers a revealing look at the finer points of lust in filmmaker Catherine Annau's whimsical documentary that aims to widen public understanding of erotic desire. From erotic art to mythology, to sexologists and authors, no topic is taboo as Cattrall takes viewers on a stimulating tour of sexual significance. In addition to exploring the possibility that people have the power to develop sexual intelligence, this crash course in human sexuality travels all the way to England to showcase a 2,000-year-old, 26-foot-long phallus before traveling to Naples to reveal the erotic treasures of ancient Pompeii at the "Secret Museum."

An actor often has two choices after creating an iconic character: reject it, à la Sean Connery's flight from James Bond; or embrace it, as Robert Young did in a slew of commercials that played off his Marcus Welby, M.D. alter ego ("I'm not a doctor, but I play one on TV"). Clearly, Kim Cattrall embraces the Robert Young model and has parlayed her role as Sex and the City's libertine Samantha Jones into a post-Sex mission as a sexual liberator. The Kim Cattrall - Sexual Intelligence DVD serves as a companion to her book of the same title, originally released in October 2005. The title cuts two ways, referring at once to "Intelligence" as knowledge and its more modern interpretation, as intel. The greater your command of the complexities involved in fulfilling a partner, the more likely you are to experience satisfaction. (Satisfaction, of course, being the title of Cattrall's book on The Art of the Female Orgasm, co-written with then-husband Mark Levinson, in 2002.) Like the book that inspired it, though, Sexual Intelligence is less a how-to than it is a journey; a historical exploration into what "turns people on." Employing interviews with sexual experts and adventurers, host Cattrall seeks a broader understanding of all matters carnal. Visits to Aphrodite's birthplace in Cyprus, and to Dorset, England -- where couples copulate on the 26-foot penis of the Cernes Giant, a 180-foot man carved into a hillside -- certainly help, even as it veers into Weird England territory. Eye opening, provocative, and lots of fun, Sexual Intelligence will entertain open-minded adult viewers, who will find repeat viewings rewarding.
