Overview

This three-disc set contains all 13 episodes from the first season of the animated series King of the Hill. Each is presented in the original broadcast aspect ratio of 1.33:1. English and Spanish soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Stereo. Subtitles are accessible in both of those languages as well. The generous and highly entertaining extra materials include episode commentaries from people involved in the shows, as well as from the characters themselves. Listening to Peggy and Bobby's discussion of how they feel about cameras following them around all the time are priceless. Deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes featurette, and a music video from Barenaked Ladies are all worthy of a viewer's time. There are many interesting hidden features including a list of do's and don'ts for the animators on how to make the characters look more realistic. 20th Century Fox has done an outstanding job on these episodes. This is one of the best television box sets on the market.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Cree McCree
King of the Hill is not as outrageous as Beavis and Butt-Head, the series anchored by a pair of monosyllabic morons, which Mike Judge created for MTV. Nor is it nearly as manic as The Simpsons, where King of the Hill co-creator Greg Daniels cut his teeth. But from the moment Hank Hill first popped an Alamo beer in the now-familiar title sequence, the show rang as true as the twang of its paunchy protagonist (who is voiced by Judge himself). Set in Arlen, Texas, a fictional stand-in for Judge's hometown of Austin, the animated Fox series has been going strong since its 1997 debut. Season 1 introduces nearly all its quirky Texan suburbanites, from paranoid survivalist Dale Gribble to the motor-mouthed Boomhauer, whose backyard rant on the Internet's trove of "nekkid chicks" is worthy of Lenny Bruce. Like Archie Bunker before him, Hank Hill is challenged by the culture clashes of modern American life. But where Archie wore blinders, Hank stumbles toward enlightenment as he deals with new Laotian neighbors; supports wife Peggy's foray into pro Boggle tournaments; doggedly resists the charms of Peggy's airhead niece, Luane; and does his fatherly best with his sharp-but-schlubby teenage boy ("Bobby, if you weren't my son, I'd hug you"). It's clear that Fox, the disc's producers, have kept priorities straight: The Easter egg on Disc 1, for instance, celebrates lawn mowing. The 3-disc set also includes piles of deleted scenes from fan favorites like "Plastic White Female," in which Bobby prepares to play spin-the-bottle by practicing kissing techniques on Luane's wig head from beauty school. Now, that's reality TV.

I am a very big fan of King of the Hill. I grew up watching it as a child and this DVD Box Set brings back ALOT of fun childhood memories. There are all kinds of special features including line art, deleted scenes, and the making of King of the Hill. This series is very funny, entertaining, and FUN! The animation drawing is very realistic and I love that! I love all the characters and still dont miss a day when they show the re-run episodes on TV! I'm happily in love with this series and will love it forever!
