Kingpin [TV Series]

Overview

The widescreen treatment of cinematographer Tim Ives' feature film-like photography, the show's most distinctive element, looks clear and sharp, with the sepia-toned exteriors holding firm; the Dolby Digital 5.1 adds the expected, but no less welcome, fuller dimension to the sound. Otherwise, extras are skimpy. Disc three includes brief on-camera sit-down interviews with the principals in the cast who simply, and repetitiously, describe their characters' traits in accordance to the way they are playing them. ...

Otherwise, extras are skimpy. Disc three includes brief on-camera sit-down interviews with the principals in the cast who simply, and repetitiously, describe their characters' traits in accordance to the way they are playing them. Creator/director David Mills frankly admits to pinching elements from Shakespeare's Macbeth (the ruthless wife aspects of the plot) as well as The Sopranos (the "human" side of ruthless behavior) in giving the network what it wanted. His candor is appreciated, but inspirations should be worn up the sleeve, not on it.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
In its quest to capture some of the mobster mojo of HBO's The Sopranos, NBC commissioned veteran writer/producer David Mills to come up with a modern-day gangster saga that would push the boundaries of language, sex, and violence on broadcast network television. Kingpin did just that, setting the mobsters in Mexico, but to mixed reviews and progressively declining ratings. The "producer's cut" of the six episodes packaged for home viewing doesn't enrich the material but it does showcase it nicely for what fans the series has. The problem with the series, which starts off with a bang and ends with a limp, is that it's too similar to its templates -- Macbeth, Traffic, and The Sopranos -- leaving little for the actors to do but try to out cool each other while shouting overheated dialogue. There are some thrills to be had, mostly involving future victims who don't know they're about to become tiger food, but most of it simply seems designed to get you from one commercial to the next. Thankfully, there are no commercials, so it moves faster but no less predictably.

    Great Series

Fantastic series, just as good as the Sopranos. Only problem is, its only 6 episodes long. Hope they release a second season.

    NBC Screwed up

I thought finally there was a network that had the...guts to make an on-the-edge, intelligent show, but they never gave it any time to develop. There were so many directions it could go after the first 6 episodes, but like any other network, it would rather scrap something tangible and start anew. It would be nice if HBO or Showtime or now even USA would have picked it up, but oh well, that's the way it goes.
