Love, lesbians and dating are explored in the independent hit Kissing Jessica Stein. Fox has done a very fine job at making sure this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is clear and very presentable. The colors and black levels are all solid and well saturated with flesh tones appearing accurately. Aside of a small amount of edge enhancement in a few minor scenes, this transfer of Kissing Jessica Stein appears to be in great shape. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English. Since this is a romantic comedy, it's not surprising to find a lack of bombastic surround sounds in the mix. While this track may not be overly busy, it does include some subtle directional effects whenever the music score of some ambient noise crop up. All aspects of the mix are free and clear of any excessive hiss or distortion. Also included on this disc are English and Spanish subtitles, as well as a Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround soundtrack in Spanish. Kissing Jessica Stein sports a few well produced supplements, starting with two commentary tracks: one by director Charles Herman-Wurmfeld and cinematographer Lawrence Sher, and a second by costars, co-writers, and co-producers Jennifer Westfeldt and Heather Juergensen. Both of these tracks feature a multitude of production information, though the second track by the women offers more insight and warmth than the generally dry director's track. Ten deleted scenes (presented in non-anamorphic widescreen) allow the viewer to see what was cut from the final film. While these scenes aren't all that exciting, it is fun to watch the cast crack-up and flub their lines. Finally there is a short featurette blandly titled "The Making of Kissing Jessica Stein" which is just a fluffy promotion for the film, and a full screen theatrical trailer.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Michael Hastings
If ever an independent comedy succeeded on the breakthrough performances of its leads, Kissing Jessica Stein is it. Following the handbook for urban lesbian romantic comedy to a tee -- right down to the sassy gay pals who populate the sidelines -- co-writers and co-stars Jennifer Westfeldt and Heather Juergensen don't score any points for originality. But their familiarity with the material (the script started life as a play) allows them to fully inhabit their characters' neuroses, with often hilarious results. Westfeldt in particular conveys a halting charm that brings to mind Lisa Kudrow; she's even able to breathe new life and truth into what could have been a very trite coming-out scene. The film's Achilles heel is a sour, Chasing Amy-style ending: the sexual turnaround the characters make in the film's coda should take an hour -- not a few minutes -- of screen time if it is to be believed. After a crowd-pleasing debut at the 2001 Los Angeles Film Festival and a similarly successful berth at the Toronto Film Festival, Kissing Jessica Stein secured a Fox Searchlight release in 2002.
Washington Post - Stephen Hunter
It's funny and human and really pretty damned wonderful, all at once.
Hollywood Reporter
A sassy, savvy romantic comedy with a shrewd sensibility.
New York Post
... a delightfully unpredictable, hilarious comedy with wonderful performances that tug at your heart in ways that utterly transcend gender labels.
