Overview

A woman searching for the perfect man instead discovers the perfect woman in this romantic comedy. Jessica Stein (Jennifer Westfeldt) is a woman with a solid career as a copy editor, but her love life isn't much to write home about; she's been through a long series of disastrous first dates that refuse to evolve into second dates, and the well-intended advice of her best friend Joan (Jackie Hoffman) and former boyfriend Josh (Scott Cohen) isn't helping a bit. One day, Jessica is scanning personal ads in the newspaper with her friends, and she sees one with a quote from her favorite poet. Jessica reads on to discover that she has a lot in common with the person who placed the ad -- too much so, since it turns out the notice is from a woman, Helen Cooper (Heather Juergensen), who manages an art gallery. Jessica figures it would at least be nice to hang out with someone who shares her interests, and she gives Helen a call. Jessica and Helen quickly strike up a close friendship that evolves into something more intimate, though neither of them has ever been involved with another woman ... and Helen is a bit more avid about her new romantic horizons than Jessica. As their relationship progresses, Jessica finds herself struggling with her feelings about her new sexual outlook, and she isn't sure how to break the news about her relationship to her mother (Tovah Feldshuh) as she tries to decide if she should bring Helen along to her brother's wedding. Kissing Jessica Stein was based on the off-Broadway play Lipschtick, which was written by Jennifer Westfeldt and Heather Juergensen, who starred in the original stage production as well as this film adaptation; the film won both the Critics' Special Jury Award and the Audience Award at the 2001 Los Angeles Film Festival.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Michael Hastings
If ever an independent comedy succeeded on the breakthrough performances of its leads, Kissing Jessica Stein is it. Following the handbook for urban lesbian romantic comedy to a tee -- right down to the sassy gay pals who populate the sidelines -- co-writers and co-stars Jennifer Westfeldt and Heather Juergensen don't score any points for originality. But their familiarity with the material (the script started life as a play) allows them to fully inhabit their characters' neuroses, with often hilarious results. Westfeldt in particular conveys a halting charm that brings to mind Lisa Kudrow; she's even able to breathe new life and truth into what could have been a very trite coming-out scene. The film's Achilles heel is a sour, Chasing Amy-style ending: the sexual turnaround the characters make in the film's coda should take an hour -- not a few minutes -- of screen time if it is to be believed. After a crowd-pleasing debut at the 2001 Los Angeles Film Festival and a similarly successful berth at the Toronto Film Festival, Kissing Jessica Stein secured a Fox Searchlight release in 2002.
Washington Post - Stephen Hunter
It's funny and human and really pretty damned wonderful, all at once.
Hollywood Reporter
A sassy, savvy romantic comedy with a shrewd sensibility.
New York Post
... a delightfully unpredictable, hilarious comedy with wonderful performances that tug at your heart in ways that utterly transcend gender labels.

A sassy, savvy romantic comedy with a shrewd sensibility.

    I've always been a blender....

I never thought that I would love this movie... I was just flipping through the HBO channels and accidentally stumbled upon this great film. Now, I bought my own copy so I can watch the movie, anytime I want a good laugh... Heather Juergensen and Jennifer Westfeldt are comedic geniuses. Ladies, you rock!

    A MUST-SEE

This movie was absolutely fabulous. The characters are truly loveable and easy to relate to. The acting and the plot are both extraordinary. Everyone should see this film!

''don't decide now, let it marinate..''

I love it. The movie is terrific and one of a kind! Its good chemistry put to action. I have ignored it from the video houses but when there's nothing to rent out and tried the movie...i didnt expect its good that i bought a copy of my own. So if you have not seen it, don't decide now, let it marinate.

    It is not inertia alone.....

I rented this movie because a friend recommended it for its Jewish humor. After the first time I watched it, I raved about it to my friends, and continued to watch it over and over. It quickly became a favorite of mine! It's nice to see this twist on a movie without it being completely focused on sex. BUY A COPY NOW!!!!!!!

    ...today's sexual preference, tomorrow's...

My friend gave me the CD she said I would find it interesting...and I did! The movie is cute and can tickle your fancies about the characters. Its unfortunate that it was not shown in all moviehouses worldwide. Somehow there is still that double standard mentality in other nations that it cannot be shown worldwide. Too fortunate for me, my friend bought and gave me a copy. This is a good movie to be recommended. Watch it and experience how the ''HELEN'' identifies with you or the ''JESSICA''...

A movie guys and girls will find sexy!

A great story that could be only topped by the actors' performances. Rarely are you treated to the writer/s starring in their own lead roles making their performances more enhanced by their personal connection to the plot. It was a movie I couldn't wait to see again. You cannot miss with this one, one of my top ten!!!!

    Loved it

I thought this was a fabulous movie...touching & humorous. It's about being out there in the tough dating scene and finding the right person...man or woman...that if you are lucky, you'll find someone who will inspire you to be the best that you can be.

    Experience The Stein

I loved this movie. I thought it was smart and funny and original. You haven't seen this story before. The best part is that it was written by two women who made the film on their own without a studio backing it. They are my new heroes!! I hope these two collaborate again.

Not everything you'd hoped it would be

MY friend is fiends with the writer, who also produced and plays jessicas love interest(I believe) so I figured when I saw it on the shelf I would give it a try. From the box and the reviews and the subject matter I'm thinkin this is gonna be histerical, however it was utterly boring and I had to try my hardest not to fall asleep. Other than some funny one liners and some decent performances this movie just does not cut it. Definatley search yourself out another movie to take home tonight.
