I think most people didn't get the show. It was definitely different, but anyone watching a comedy special with Kristen Schaal shouldn't have expected anything but something unusual. She played a comedian on a downward spiral which ends on her deathbed. She faltered on some of her jokes, then was upstaged by a 10 year old girl, with a great 4 minute stand up routine after being challenged by Schaal to "come up here and do better if you can." The credits show that hilarious performance was by actress Chloe Noelle from True Blood.
Schaal then proceeded downhill from that point. "Who was that little girl?" she screams during one of her breakdowns. Clearly part of the act. She continued to play up the "horrible performance" in the weeks leading up to the airing of the special, on April Fools Day no less. She challenged people not watch the show, offering suggestions they watch old reruns of Fresh Prince or Kojak instead that were airing at the same time!
Kristen Schaal is more of a performance artist than a stand up comedian. She's been compared to Andy Kaufman, again, not someone everyone loved, but was clearly a genius in pushing people to the limits. Schaal has done the same with this special.
I enjoyed the show, getting the whole thing. More people need to watch it a second time, and maybe get a deeper appreciation of what Kristen Schaal was doing in this performance.
