Krull

Overview

Krull was a lot of fun when it met with a Star Wars-hungry audience back in 1983, and it's a great deal of fun on DVD as well. Fitted with a beautiful, rich 2.35:1 presentation and dynamic Dolby Digital Sound, the DVD seemingly delivers a viewer right into the lap of director Peter Yates' fantasy world. Since the movie wasn't a blockbuster on the level of the films that inspired it, it's a treat that the DVD is packed with great supplemental material. The stylish menus are admirable eye candy, though it's unusual...

The stylish menus are admirable eye candy, though it's unusual that the movie's score doesn't play after one accesses the "Special Features" area. "Journey to Krull" is a nostalgic, blurb-heavy, 20-minute promotional featurette narrated by Tom Bosley; it's worth a look for fans. Two full-length audio commentaries are available. The first features Yates and three of the movie's stars; Yates and company are friendly and informative, putting the movie and its action scenes into proper perspective. The second commentary track is an odd advertisement, as a monotone narrator reads from a script; it's hard to enjoy. Four high-quality photo galleries present cast portraits, behind-the-scenes images, design and concept artwork, and vintage advertising material. "Talent Files" presents the usual filmographies for Yates and three primary actors. A theatrical trailer sits alongside two trailers from like-minded films. All chapters can be instantly selected via chapter titles, numbers, and film clips from the "Chapters" menu.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Jason Buchanan
An ambitious sci-fi/fantasy that even in its failures can usually be forgiven for its sheer sense of bravado, Krull offers some truly memorable images despite its somewhat wooden leading man and familiar trappings. Remaining relatively tame in light of like-minded contemporary efforts, Krull nevertheless manages to be effective by means of some truly horrific foes, a reliance on solid storytelling, and a sinister villain pulled straight from the darkest of fairy tales. The melding of appropriately mythic Arthurian sensibilities with such futuristic elements as lasers and a mysterious fortress with the ability to shift location with the rising sun offers an original take on the familiar fantasy mainstays, and even if it does seem overly familiar at times there is just enough originality injected into the visualization of the film that it's hard to dismiss as just another Star Wars clone. Though many will ultimately write Krull off as such, memorable touches such as the shrieking death squeal of the Slayers, a highly original weapon, and an appropriately sweeping score will no doubt provide older viewers with a striking sense of nostalgia while simultaneously offering a solid guilty pleasure for the uninitiated.

I remember watching this on TV when it came out I was 11 at the time and bought it on VHS and still have it. At the time it was state of the art movie, now a days you can see some of the flaws that's ok it's still a good movie, but it's cool to see a young liam neeson in it.

krull a new fave in the fantasy adventure collection

ladyhawke, the princess bride, willow and labyrinth. awesome how movies back then were sorta cheesy but still pretty good. i saw this on demand and recognized that chakram like weapon which appeared in that south park easter episode. this is the story of a prince, a band of fighers, who help him get back his bride who has been kidnapped by an alien where his mountain fortress arrived from space. cool to see liam neeson before he was well known. some of the scenes i noticed seem a little awkward. the landscapes were amazing, and i noticed that it was face paced including that any fantasy film must have a creepy spider scene. some scenes reminded me of movies or shows from xena warrior princess to indiana jones with the romance like of the princess bride.

KRULL - the power to kill anyone...anywhere!!!!!

This movie is TIGHT!!! Krull was one of the only movies of the 80's that makes E.T. look like rubbish. My favorite part is where the guy off Krull (maybe Tom Seleck??) throws that star thing and it totally hit the green-nosed man (evil) in the schlongo. I don't know if anyone saw it, but the main character was laying some mean side-pipe in that movie. I hope people rally around this movie as I feel it makes a case for love-making. I wish I could be a Krull someday.

    Pretty cool film

I would have to say that this movie is cool. It's kinda like a mix of Star Wars and a medieval tale.I would like to have that throwing star.

    Review for Krull

Krull is one of the best fantasy movies that I have ever seen and probably will ever see. I have seen this movie so many times and never grow tired of it.
