Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Lost is found at last on DVD! The fifth series from H. R. Pufnstuf creators Sid and Marty Krofft, Land of the Lost holds up better than most of the Kroffts' kitschier, campier series. Channeling their fondness for stories featuring creatures of imaginative origins -- such as Witchie Poo and Pufnstuf -- into something with more historical foundations, the Kroffts plunged into the dinosaur world for this 1974 Saturday morning entry. In fact, it is Rick Marshall and his children, Will and Holly, who do the plunging: over a waterfall in their tiny raft, following "the greatest earthquake ever known." They find themselves in a land of prehistoric beasts, missing links, and alien creatures. Happily, there is none of the intrusive canned laughter that has dated previous Krofft offerings, and Will and Holly's adventures will certainly engage the imaginations of their peers watching at home. Land of the Lost's cheesy look, an unwieldy merging of film and video, is part of its endearing, and enduring, charm. But young dino-lovers will still thrill to the timeless stop-motion animation by Wah Chang and Gene Warren, veterans of fantasy master George Pal’s workshop. The series also employed a stable of accomplished sci-fi writers, many with Star Trek credentials. David Gerrold, for example, who wrote Land's pilot episode, "Cha-Ka," wrote the classic "The Trouble with Tribbles." Like much of the Krofft oeuvre, Land of the Lost enjoys a devoted cult following. Thirty years later, a new generation will find this retro gem pure escapist entertainment.

    So Bad It's Good

I adored this show growing up, and when I saw it on DVD I had to own it. I can't say that I enjoyed it as much as I did when I was ten, but it was very entertaining to see it again. I can also recommend it for parents--the plot lines are right up my three-year-old's alley...lots of dinosaurs, and dialog that pretty much sticks to phrases like "Let's get out of here!" and "Run, run!" A wonderful, campy stroll down memory lane.
