A popular video game comes to the screen with this big-budget adventure starring Angelina Jolie as a buxom heroine recalling equal parts Indiana Jones and James Bond. Jolie is Lara Croft, a proper British aristocrat groomed at schools for the children of the elite. Croft leads a double life, however, as an acquirer of lost antiquities through questionable means, highly trained in combat skills with the help of a robotic opponent called Simon. Despite her exciting profession and a life of wealth and breeding, Lara pines for her father, Lord Croft (Jon Voight), whose passing left her orphaned. On the eve of a celestial event that will also mark the anniversary of Lord Croft's death, Lara comes up against an ancient organization called the Illuminati, represented by the sinister Powell (Iain Glen), who's in pursuit of an ancient relic with power over time and even death itself. With the aid of her high-tech support team, Lara travels to some exotic locales in search of the artifact, including a foray into a decrepit Asian temple guarded by lethal stone apes and other creatures that spring to life. Filmed at various locations in Great Britain as well as Iceland and the Angkor Wat temples of Cambodia, Tomb Raider co-stars Noah Taylor, Chris Barrie, Daniel Craig, Rachel Appleton, Leslie Phillips, Mark Collie, and Julian Rhind-Tutt.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
A rollicking, action-packed adventure film in the tradition of Raiders of the Lost Ark and the recent Mummy movies, Tomb Raider belies its electronic origin by substituting shapely, sinewy, and sultry Angelina Jolie for the popular video game's two-dimensional heroine. She's well cast as Lara Croft, the aristocratic adventuress who's equally at home in posh London tearooms and musty Egyptian tombs. An ancient memento left to Lara by her late father (played by Jolie's real-life dad, Jon Voight) is the key to uncovering a long-lost talisman whose possession grants power over time itself. A centuries-old secret society, represented by suave villain Iain Glen and marginally scrupulous adventurer Daniel Craig, uses the opportunity of a rare planetary alignment to secure the talisman -- and only Lara can prevent them from using its incomprehensible power for evil ends. Director Simon West (The General's Daughter) clearly realizes that he's not doing Shakespeare; he encourages the cast to approach their chores with tongues planted firmly in cheeks, and they oblige him in such a way as to make Tomb Raider an enjoyable and fast-paced (if wildly improbable) romp. Jolie's histrionic ability isn't taxed nearly as much as her athletic ability, but she tackles speeches and stunts alike with appropriate brio and is never less than utterly convincing in her action scenes. Tomb Raider, like its inspiration, is fast, loud, and strikingly visual -- and, also like its inspiration, lots of fun. The DVD extras include a Simon West commentary, interviews with cast members, four deleted scenes, documentaries on the film's visual effects and stunt sequences, an overview of the Tomb Raider phenomenon, an alternate title sequence, and a U2 music video, along with DVD-ROM content related to the video game.
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert
Here is a movie so monumentally silly, yet so wondrous to look at, that only a churl could find fault.

I know that there are people out there that may think that I'm crazy, but I just wanted to say that Tomb Raider is an awesome movie. The pure essance of a good adventure movie. It has a good story line, action, characters that you will never forget, an interesting view, and is just captivating.

This is my favorite movie of all-time! It is action-packed and Angelina Jolie is a great Lara Croft. The story is original, unlike the Indy Jones movies. You can't resist Jolie's hot Lara Croft look, and I can't wait for the sequel!

Tomb Raider is the best movie yet to come!! It has so much action and violence, but of corse that's what makes a movie great!!!The best movie since The Mummy Returns!!!!

First, I'm not really reviewing the DVD here, but rather the movie itself, so I can't vouch for the production quality of the DVD. Tomb Raider is a silly, inane and totally implausible movie, but it's also a tremendous amount of fun provided you're willing to just sit back and go along for the ride. Angelina Jolie does an exceptional job in transforming a video game character into a full blown action hero. Sure, it's not Indiana Jones by a long shot, but this movie serves up its share of laughs (both intentional and unintentional), and a lot of adventure. Good fun all around, and recommended to anyone capable of suspending their disbelief for a couple of hours.

Angelena Jolie plays an excellent part as 'Lara Croft'. This story is based upon a young child who grows up facing the devastating facts of her parents deaths. It is Lara's job to attend her fathers duty of saving the world, though she soon finds out later on from suspicious clues. Throughout the movie, it takes you into a different world of excitement and adventure as Lara fights her way out of life to try to save her father and bring him back, but she soon realizes that all things can't go her way. I like this movie because it brings in all sorts of emotions that you could experience through the movie as if you were there. I encourage people like me to watch this movie because it doesn't have a boring plot, it keeps you alert of unsuspected things that may occur, its very dramatic, and I think thats what most people are looking for in a movie.

This was one great movie. I liked how they got a bunch of great actors and how the directing was done. This is one of the few game-to-film movies that actually got many critic's full attention. Most of the game-to-film movies in the past were given little or no credit at all (Mario Bros., Mortal Kombat, etc.)

Tomb Raider is the best action movie I have seen in a long time. Angelina Jolie delivers a great performance and made a great Lara Croft. If you have ever played the games, you will see that they did a wonderful job of bringing Lara and the actual game to life. Watch this movie! You will love it! I DID!!!!!!!!!

Angelina Jolie IS Lara Croft in this movie, it seems as though they designed Lara Croft having Angelina in mind. The stunts are awesome! The first scene when we see Lara fighting against the robot is the best opening/introduction to her character. I would recommend this movie to every woman who has ever been let down by the men in her life to buy this movie and watch it when you feel as though women's rights are being denied.

Angelina gives a stunning performance like she does in every movie. Lara Croft has raised herself most of her life, since her father's death the cause of which was never known to her, accordingly to her own wishes. she's an heiress and a tomb raider whose willing to do anything to learn more about her father's death. He left clues behind for her to an ancient treasure that will only be revealed when an alignment takes place which a secret organiztation wants to get it's hands on. It was a great movie but there was one part that baffled me and some of my friends, there was a part where Lara Croft and Alex were together near the beginning and they were talking about something that happened in the past where Alex stole something from her, they're both tomb raiders and they were both peetending to be something they weren't, which made me and my friends really want to know what happened becuase you kind of got the vibe of a past romance there also.

After my Dad died, I went to see this film, and it means a great deal to me. Once you watch it you will know why. If you've ever lost someone, like a parent, and want to see him or her again, then you will be able to derive a deeper meaning from this action adventure flick, which by the way is AWESOME in every respect, and I would recommend this to everyone! Great movie with a great script!!
