Overview

The second season of the witty ultra-slick Gary Scott Thompson series Las Vegas has arrived on DVD from Universal in a set of three double-sided discs. The show looks handsome enough, sporting letterboxed (1.78-to-1) transfers that are crisp enough to pass for high-definition, and smooth, rich sound -- mastered a little low in volume but it does pump up nice and full. Each episode has been given four chapter-markers corresponding to the breaks in the action, but there are no special features within the actual programs themselves (it would be illuminating to hear from a producer, director, or cinematographer, or even a production designer or costume designer about what goes into shooting a series such as this). Instead, the limited bonus features are confined to two featurettes on the second side of Disc Three: "V.I.P. Access Only" is a full-screen (1.33-to-1) tour of the "high roller" facilities at the Palms Casino; and the gag reel offers goofy moments from Seasons 1 and 2 of the series, with the usual flubbed lines and cues that don't come off, plus and intentional parody of the opening credits. Individual episodes and the bonus features are all accessible through simple, easy-to-use dual-layer menus that open automatically on start-up (once one clicks past a series of previews for other Universal series).

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
An unexpectedly pleasant surprise that emerged from the generally weak 2003-4 network TV season, Las Vegas delighted viewers with its inside look into the workings of a big casino and the colorful characters populating it. The 24 episodes of Season 2, which concluded in the spring of ’05, successfully built upon concepts and characterizations established in the series' first year. James Caan is back as Big Ed Deline, operations chief of the Montecito Resort & Casino, where he's constantly on the lookout for scam artists, card counters, and tricksters of all kinds -- not to mention the agents employed by his competitors, who would love to lure away the house’s high rollers. Josh Duhamel portrays Deline's right-hand man, Danny McCoy, alongside Mary Connell (Nikki Cox) and Sam Jane (Vanessa Marcil). Other regular characters include sharp-witted valet Mike Cannon (James Lesure), hard-boiled pit boss Nessa Holt (Marsha Thomason), and Big Ed's daughter, Delinda (Molly Sims), who can't resist the lure of her dad's seemingly glamorous business. Lending verisimilitude to the show is a procession of guest stars playing themselves and in some cases performing at the Montecito. Season 2 notables include Paul Anka, Alec Baldwin, Clint Black, Jon Bon Jovi, Snoop Dogg, George Hamilton, Tony Orlando, and Sylvester Stallone. Las Vegas, like its namesake, is a little bit cheesy at times and not nearly as glamorous as all those neon lights and plush carpets suggest. But, also like its namesake, the show is fast-paced, exciting, and more than a little surprising. Watching it is the next-best thing to actually being there. Standout episodes include: "Blood Is Thicker," in which old rivals return and frame Ed for murder; "Two of a Kind," the Crossing Jordan crossover episode featuring a Vegas visit by Jill Hennessey and Jerry O'Connell, as well as a Snoop Dog cameo; and "Tainted Love," featuring Dean Cain as a billionaire client who has a surprise connection to Sam.
