Overview

This set contains three comedies from 20th Century Fox. Big Momma's House, Dr. Dolittle, and Dr. Dolittle 2 are each presented in standard full-frame transfers. The English soundtracks are all clearly rendered. Big Momma's House contains a commentary track recorded by the director, makeup tests, deleted scenes with optional commentary, and music videos. Dr. Dolittle offers the original trailer. Dolittle 2 serves up a commentary recorded by the director, the trailer, storyboard to film comparisons, and a music video. Each of these titles is available individually, but this set offers a cost-effective way to acquire all three.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - David Schneiderman
Step aside, Tootsie, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Mrs. Klump -- Big Momma's in the house! Martin Lawrence is FBI agent Malcolm Turner, hot on the trail of a bank robber who has broken out of jail. Turner goes undercover to infiltrate the world of the thief's ex-girlfriend Sherry (Nia Long), donning latex and foam to disguise himself as her hefty aunt, the cantankerous southern matriarch Big Momma. As formula dictates, things begin to get complicated when, amidst a barrage of gross-out jokes, Turner becomes smitten with Sherry. You have to appreciate Lawrence for his willingness to put himself all the way out there for our enjoyment. Even extroverted New York Knicks power forward Larry Johnson gave up the Grandma-ma drag before typecasting became an issue. But since Big Momma's House proved pretty close to its boast of being "the mother of all comedies" at the box office, it looks like Lawrence will do some dress duty for years to come.
Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
This PG-rated sequel to Eddie Murphy's critter-crazy 1998 hit is much more family-friendly than the original, and that's a good thing. Murphy, too, seems to be a bit more at ease here, even as the animals continue to get all the best lines. Dr. Dolittle's veterinary practice couldn’t be better, but his ability to talk to the animals still embarrasses his 16-year-old daughter. The good doctor's life is thrown into further turmoil when the Godbeaver, a woodland capo, makes him an offer he can't refuse: Save a forest from unscrupulous developers (Jeffrey Jones and Kevin Pollack). To do that, he will have to find a mate for an endangered female bear (voiced by Friends star Lisa Kudrow). The solution involves coaxing a third-rate circus bear (Steve Zahn) who is, well, a bit sheepish. So Dolittle goes into Dr. Ruth Westheimer mode, which recalls the original Dr. Dolittle, Rex Harrison, in another role -- as Professor Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady, tutoring…Eliza Doolittle! It would be enough to give you Hepburn, were it not such good fun. Dolittle 2 has all the bear necessities: animal antics and the bodily-function gags to make youngsters giggle, plus pop-culture references and the occasional mildly naughty joke to keep adults from squawking.
