Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
Brilliant, eccentric Det. Robert Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) and his partner, the hardworking Detective Alexandra Eames (Kathryn Erbe), returned to the beat in 2002-3 for another season of Criminal Intent. The second spin-off of the Law & Order franchise (after L&O: Special Victims Unit), Criminal Intent breaks from its earlier sibling's two-act structures: Viewers see the suspect, victim, and murder in the opening teaser, so it's the cops who have to figure out whodunit rather than the audience. D'Onofrio's acting choices -- filled with twitches and verbal tics -- can be mesmerizing; watching Goren interrogate the suspect is generally the highlight of every show. Using near-incredible deductive abilities (along with psychological manipulation), Goren determines who perpetrated the double murder of a social service worker and a deputy mayor in "Bright Boy"; he discovers who has been diluting cancer medication and giving it to patients in "Malignant"; and he's able to identify who murdered a woman with Botox injections in "Suite Sorrow." Erbe does her best to keep up with her costar, getting more comfortable in her role as quippy sidekick throughout Season 2, but it's really D'Onofrio's show. Great guest stars abound, too: TV greats Linda Lavin and Hal Linden pop up, as do "I know that actor from somewhere!" television workhorses like Lee Tergesen (Oz); Peter Gerety (Homicide: Life on the Street); Mark Linn-Baker (Perfect Strangers ); Lance Reddick (The Wire); Max Casella (The Sopranos); and William Sadler (Roswell).

This has been, so far, the best season of law and order criminal intent. The writing was still fresh at this point and the actors had all finally become comfortable with their characters and perhaps with each other. In the first season Kathryn Erbe's character often seemed pointless and she and the writers didn't seem to know how she should react to D'Onofrio. However, in this season she is perfect and the writers seem more comfortable with her character. She doesn't just stand around looking annoyed with Goren while he does all the work in this season. There are many great episodes throughout the season including the amazing "Probability" guest starring Mark Lynn-Baker (best known as Larry from Perfect Strangers, his role in this episode is about as different from that character as you can get) Thank you, Dick Wolf and Universal for finally releasing this.

I had already ordered this product once from B&N but returned it because of a defective disc. I had no problems with the return and received credit promptly. I re-ordered the product because I wanted to add it to my library but, again the same disc (# 4 out of 5) is defective. I will return again and pay the return postage, again, but that will be the last time. I'll see if someone else can provide me with a non-defective item.
