Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
While most series begin lagging around Season 4 or so, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit remains ascendant in Season 6, with a majority of its 23 episodes falling into the must-see category. Detectives Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) and Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) return to their beat, hunting down rapists, child abusers, and sexual offenders for the NYPD's Special Victims Unit. Assisting them are Capt. Cragen (Dann Florek); Detectives John Munch (the criminally underused Richard Belzer) and Fin Tutuola (Ice-T); and criminal prosecutor Casey Novak (Diane Neal). As usual, guest stars shine in the L&O universe, none more so this season than Amanda Plummer, who won a well-deserved Emmy for playing schizophrenic rape victim Miranda Cole in "Weak." Other great episodes include "Night" (the conclusion of which can be seen in the Law & Order: Trial by Jury episode "Day"), which features Alfred Molina as a mentally challenged man and Angela Lansbury as his mother. In "Scavenger," Doug Hutchison portrays a copycat serial killer with serious mommy (Anne Meara) issues. "Charisma," about a career con artist turned cult leader, has one of the most harrowing -- and disturbing -- opening scenes of any season. Billy Campbell stars as a university professor accused of rape in "Doubt," which is notable for its ending, while a clever twist in DNA evidence makes "Identity" one of the best of the season. In "Ghost," D.A. Alex Cabot (Stephanie March) is forced out of witness protection to face down drug dealers; Martin Short guests as a psychic who claims he can help solve a murder in "Pure"; and, in one of most intense episodes of the season, Meloni is well matched against Matthew Modine, playing a convicted child murderer in "Rage."
