Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
The 1993-94 season of this consistently fine drama marks the debut of Jill Hennessy as Assistant District Attorney Claire Kincaid, assigned to work with ADA Ben Stone (Michael Moriarty, who bowed out of the series after this year). L&O creator and executive producer Dick Wolf deftly works Kincaid into the show's fabric, giving her a real showcase in "Censure," an episode that sees her resigning from the DA's office (briefly) over a case that brings up a traumatic event from her past. Another showcase episode turns the spotlight on Detectives Lennie Briscoe (Jerry Orbach) and Mike Logan (Chris Noth): "Mayhem" follows these hardworking cops during a 24-hour period in which they participate in five unrelated homicide investigations. Among the 22 episodes in this box set are several distinguished by outstanding guest-star performances: "Sweeps" features Robert Klein as an abrasive radio talk-show host suspected of killing a guest on his controversial show; and James Earl Jones plays a flamboyant African-American attorney who defends an admitted racist accused of random attacks in "Profile." Future West Wing star Allison Janney dominates the season finale, "Old Friends," which pits the detectives and prosecutors against the Russian Mob. As usual, many of the individual stories are fictionalizations of real-life events that were in the news back then. From these relatively early episodes in the show's lengthy run, it's easy to see why this series has held its own in the ratings and spawned several spin-offs as well. The writing is terrific, the direction is muscular, and the performances are always excellent. For those L&O fans that preferred Moriarty to his successor, Sam Waterston (and we know you're out there), Season 4 is a must-have, as it contains some of the finest work on the show.
