Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
Although producer Dick Wolf’s cops-and-prosecutors hit Law & Order sometimes seems as ubiquitous as a screen saver, it remained something of a cult favorite in this second season, airing on Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. ET for the first half of the season before shifting to 9:00 midway through the year. The season opener finds Det. Mike Logan Chris Noth struggling with the death of his Season 1 partner, Sgt. Max Greevey George Dzundza. In the first of many significant cast shifts that have kept L&O fresh over the years, Paul Sorvino as Det. Phil Cerreta joins Noth for one of the best Law teams ever. Dann Florek returns for his second of three seasons here as Capt. Donald Cragen, a role he reprised when L&O spun off Special Victims Unit in 1999. On the Order side, Executive ADA Ben Stone Michael Moriarty, ADA Paul Robinette Richard Brooks, and DA Adam Schiff Steven Hill remain unchanged from Season 1, and their dynamics are also among the best in the series’ history. Notable episodes include the Emmy Award-winning "Heaven," where an investigation into a club fire -- characteristically inspired by an actual event, a tragedy in which 87 people were killed -- connects arson, illegal immigrants, and the sale of green cards. An obsessive soap-opera fan attempts to murder an actress in "Star Struck," while in "Silence," a politician fights the prosecution of his son’s murderer because it would mean revealing his son was gay. Another standout is "Trust," in which Stone mounts a desperate case against a teen killer who he believes has already gotten away with murder once before. Leading the always delightful parade of character actors who give Law & Order its weekly spice are William H. Macy in "Sisters of Mercy", Nicholas Turturro "Blood Is Thicker", Jerry Stiller "The Fertile Fields", and The West Wing’s Allison Janney "Star Struck", among many others.

    As good as it gets

As someone who doesn't watch much television, I may be the only person in the UK who, until Law & Order began to be released on DVD, had never seen a single episode. Of course, I'm now hooked. If I could give it 10 stars I would. Many people may feel that the success of the series lies in the excellence of the writing and while the scripts are undoubtedly superb, the show's true brilliance lies in the acting. Much of the dialogue is actually rather straightforward and matter of fact and in the hands of a less talented group of actors, could have been mind-numbingly dull. However, in the hands of the cast of the first and second seasons, this is never even a remote possibility. Their skill lies in transforming themselves so successfully into the characters that you forget that these are actors speaking lines - from a script. Even though little information is provided about the main characters, you'll feel, watching each episode, that you really know the people involved. This is a tribute to the talents of the actors involved. It's the sort of acting which often seems to be woefully under-rated, especially by those who favour the histrionic, declamatory, arm-waving school of drama. However, to this layperson at least, the sort of acting which a show like Law & Order requires, is much more difficult and demanding. You'll be hard-pressed to find anything on either stage or screen which comes close to the technical proficiency and realism of the acting in Law & Order. Set aside a weekend and just watch the whole of seasons 1 and 2 all in one go.

    Law and Order Fan

Good episodes. I liked Max a lot but the transition was great having Phill Ceratta take over. Mike Logan is my faviorite out of all the cast. Ben Stone has some real hard cases in this box set. A must have for all fans of the TV show. Buy it today!!
