Overview

Peter Howitt directs Julianne Moore and Pierce Brosnan in the Hepburn/Tracy-inspired romantic comedy Laws of Attraction. The film debuts on DVD with a pair of transfers. The widescreen anamorphic transfer preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1, and is preferable to the standard full-frame image. English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Stereo. English and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include deleted scenes that also include an alternative ending for the picture and a pair of theatrical trailers. This is a by-the-numbers release from New Line that does offer first-class sound and picture quality.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
While fluffy romantic comedies never seem to go out of style, it’s increasingly difficult to produce one that seems fresh. Charismatic and appealing stars often provide the necessary oomph, though -- and that’s the case with Laws of Attraction. Pierce Brosnan and Julianne Moore play divorce lawyers who are diametrically opposed, not only professionally but personally as well. He’s rumpled and insouciant; she’s fastidious and tightly wound. But opposites always attract in movies like this (hence the title), and before long they’re trading kisses and quips instead of barbs and briefs. There’s just one small problem: They’re pitted against each other in a high-profile case involving a rock star (Michael Sheen) and his wife (Parker Posey). We’re not giving much away to tell you that the plot complications are predictable, nor do we mind saying that you’ll probably figure things out long before the characters do. But there’s great fun getting there, thanks to a surfeit of clever lines delivered in sprightly fashion by these personable performers. Brosnan and Moore have great chemistry; he’s especially good when playing somebody as cheeky as this lawyer, and for all her dramatic chops Moore seems very much at home in a slightly daffy characterization. Supporting players Frances Fisher (as Moore’s earthy mom) and Nora Dunn (playing a straitlaced judge) contribute scene-stealing turns that add to the fun. Laws of Attraction is, admittedly, pretty slight stuff, and some might think the film unworthy of its talented cast. But as a throwback to old-fashioned Hollywood comedies like Adam’s Rib (from which director Peter Howitt has cribbed shamelessly), it’s very much the type of movie you want to put in the DVD player on a rainy afternoon.

Okay, so yes...this movie has been out for several years, but I only just watched this movie for the first time the other day. I rather enjoyed it too. This movie was funny and rather refreshing. Everyone did a great job at their roles, and I have to say...Michael Sheen played one of the best rocker character roles that I have seen in a while. All around, this movie was witty, funny, and over all just a very entertaining movie. Romantic comedies aren't exactly my absolute favorite types of movies, but I do like them. I dabble in a little bit of everything, and this one was great...a definite future addition to my collection. I would recommend this to anyone who is just looking to laugh, but that wants a little something refreshing as well. An enjoyable one to watch with the girlfriend/boyfriend or wife/husband.

I was afraid that this remake of 'Adam's Rib' would not live up to the Hepburn/Tracy classic, but the story was different yet similar enough to pull it off. It's one of those movies that is rarely made anymore, consequently making it a breath of fresh air as you watch it. It's funny, amusing, and I promise that you'll laugh.

I liked this movie so much it will be one I purchase for my library! The stars made it believable with Brosnan's honesty and Moore's denial. It has all the makings of a great romance. It is great on DVD because I think I liked the alternate ending best!!

I can't remember when I've enjoyed a movie more. Every scene, every bit, is so well done you can't help but smile as you watch the characters find their way around each other. Bravo!! Encore!!

Pierce is at his generous best allowing Julianne to shine as he plays it soft and slow and sensative. Doesn't take the role or himself too seriously which makes for some witty comedy! Easy plot and yes, there are a few surprises. Michael Sheen and Parker Posey are great as rocker and designer spouses; their timing is perfect as they play against each other. Overall, great fluff film.
