I really enjoyed reading the book Les Miserable by Victor Hugo. It was a nice stretch for my reading abilities and it wasn’t too difficult. The book is about a peasant named Jean Valjean, who is proclaimed to be a criminal in France during the French Revolution. The plot follows Jean Valjean and shows his struggles to live a better life. He is very ambitious and compelling. Jean Valjean’s feelings and actions give a great example of what it was like to be a third class member, because this actions show what people had to do to survive, when they were in the lowest and poorest class off all.
The minor characters in the story have their own plots and life stories that help support the main character’s story. I feel like seeing a different point of view on the history of France made it easier to understand. The book itself is very well written; it is not what you would think of a typical book on French history. Victor Hugo does a fabulous job describing the characters feeling and thoughts. The book contains a lot of background information and several details about each setting and each character. Victor Hugo takes time to put a great amount of detail into each character and he does a great job at explaining their personalities.
The story contains a plot, which catches the reader’s interest and holds it until the last page. I have to admit; there are about fifty pages where it is boring and vague. Sometimes I thought that the descriptions were a little lengthy but in the end that’s what is needed to complete the characters. Other than, that the book is phenomenal. I would definitely recommend this book for a high school student. It helps you understand what you learned in class about French Revolution. The characters give you a different perspective on the everyday life in France and help you understand each social group in more depth. He allows the reader to make lots of connections with the character by keeping the characters true to themselves and realistic.
