    Berlioz would have loved it

This is one of the best of the Met performances. They've given Berlioz' huge work the production that it deserves. Jessye Norman is the shining star of the show. She always sings with such emotion, and her voice is just glorious. It's so big that when Tatiana Troyanos comes on in Part 2 you wonder if the volume has been turned down. The scene when Norman and the roomfull of virgins kill themselves is stunning. Placido Domingo is as wonderful as always. He makes Aeneas heroic, yet the love duet with Troyanos is very gentle. This opera has a large cast and chorus, several marches and three ballets. The props and costumes meet the Met's usual high standards. Subtitles are in English only. All 4 hours are on one DVD. In the early 80's the Met was rightfully proud of the fact that these films were taken from a single unedited performance. Unfortunately, the picture quality of all of them is a bit blurry and dark, and colors are muted. The sound is very good. Prepare yourself for a long intense evening.
