Lethal Force

Overview

Unearthed Films has done well by fans of this lesser-known genre effort by giving it the deluxe treatment on dvd. The film's full-frame transfer does the best it can with the film's rough-and-tumble 16mm cinematography and the film's stereo mix offers a clear blend of dialogue, effects and music. Where this disc really shines is in its selection of bonus features. The features are kicked off by a lively commentary featuring auteur Alvin Ecarma and members of his crew: Ecarma sets the pace, offering up a ...

Where this disc really shines is in its selection of bonus features. The features are kicked off by a lively commentary featuring auteur Alvin Ecarma and members of his crew: Ecarma sets the pace, offering up a breathless array of production factoids and a dizzying barrage of comments on the film's many homages to other films, television shows and comic books. There are also galleries of production photos, conceptual art and images of action figures based on the film's characters. However, the most unique of the features is a trio of Ecarma's early films: "My Dog Has A Cyst" and "Me" are one-joke affairs but "A Conversation" is a clever gem that mixes philosophical discussion and fisticuffs. The package is rounded by a set of trailers for Lethal Force and other Unearthed Films DVD releases. All in all, this is a fine, lovingly-assembled disc that will please anyone who likes Ecarma's work.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Lethal Force is a unique entry in the world of no-budget filmmaking because it bypasses the horror and exploitation genres to focus on action. The end result suffers from some of the problems that typically hamper no-budget films: the big flaws are some weak performances (namely Frank Prather's emotionless lead turn) and the fact that the end result often feels disjointed in terms of tone and storytelling. That said, Lethal Force will entertain any fan of no-budget filmmaking because it makes up for its flaws with plenty of energy and action. Writer/director/star Alvin Ecarma wisely limits his story to 70 minutes and packs every minute with color, offbeat characters and plenty of action. The action sequences are the highlight, making up for their lack of polish with plenty of audacity and an endearingly demented style of action that falls halfway between a John Woo movie and a Tex Avery cartoon. All in all, Lethal Force probably won't travel well outside of cult movie circles but anyone who can appreciate a homegrown, fan-made genre effort will find something to enjoy here.
