They also spend a great deal of time praising the work and commitment of the stellar cast (Billy Bob Thornton, Holly Hunter, and Morgan Freeman). A making-of featurette, and trailers round out this release. Columbia/TriStar has done its best to help this film find an audience on home video.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
A brilliantly modulated star turn by Billy Bob Thornton distinguishes this unusually ripping drama, which is additionally graced with a smart script, incisive direction, and terrific performances by a first-rate cast. Thornton plays Manny Jordan, a convicted murderer released from prison after serving 22 years for impulsively killing a store clerk in a botched robbery attempt. Returning to his hometown, Manny hardly knows what to do with his life, but he wants to atone for his sins and hopes he'll get the opportunity to help someone headed for trouble. Morgan Freeman has the showiest supporting role, that of enigmatic soup-kitchen preacher Miles Evans, who assures Manny that redemption is possible. Holly Hunter is quietly moving as the sister of Manny's victim, and a cast-against-type Kirsten Dunst provides a vivid characterization of a self-destructive young woman. Writer-director Ed Solomon has taken potentially sordid material and made from it a genuinely engrossing movie -- a little too somber and preachy at times, but compulsively watchable. On the basis of the acting alone, Levity is a film that can and should be savored repeatedly, making it a natural for inclusion in your home library.

    I'm a Billy Bob Fan

This movie is one of those obscure ones that had no theatrical release and no advertising. What a shame, too, because it's a good film. Billy Bob and Holly Hunter work really well together and Morgan Freeman takes us for a ride with a surprise twist in the end. If you're a Billy Bob Thornton fan like me then this film is a must for your collection.
